Well, this was supposed to be a simple drop in a go…I've put in an AFH 1.4 motor with a 5 speed 8P gear box in my 1977 1.1 golf…the motor is all hooked up and fitted and running my only issue now is the connection between the gear stick and the gear box!!!!!
Having read several build threads on this and talked to lots of people …I know need a definitive answer to my question..
What do I need to connect my gear rod ( from the gear stick) to the gear box!!
The problem I have is the actual rod seems to short to connect the ball cage to the rod and allow it to fit over the ball of the gear box selector!!
Is there any different in gear rod length on earlier cars?
Which cage…which ball …which gear rod …please help!
I've got a selection of ball cages ..and two ball connectors
It's the only thing stopping the car going for MOT!!!!

Does the input shaft on the old gearbox look any longer than the 5 speed??
I have a 1.3 driver running a AFH but haven't put the 5 speed box on yet (waiting for the new clutch to arrive)
And the 4 speed doesn't look any different from the 5 speed form memory I'll have a look when I'm home

Sorted!! It was the older gear rod that's the problem..changed it out for an 82 and works fine👍
