Fuelling issues

Just got my mk1 on the road last night and already have issues! 
I had rust in the fuel filter which clogged it up so I've replaced it, but now the pump isn't pumping when attached. I've taken it off and pushed the spring bit in to pump fuel, then I managed to pump it with the ignition into a rag but when the pipes connected to the carb it will just not pump fuel through :/ 
Help please?!
