Hi there can anybody help me? I have no clue how to set up a brake regulator on a mk 1 golf gti?

Does yours have one already fitted or are you considering fitting one ? If the latter then instead why not consider fitting brake regulator master cylinder valves instead, so much easier.

yes mate ir already has one fitted. the on it was no good so i got a new one just dont no how to set it up. cheers martyn

I don't know if it can be properly set up at home, all you can do is take a guess at the setting so its about 1/3 way engaged when the car is at rest and normal height. If the car is loaded at the back and the suspension goes down, you'd want more rear braking. And with the weight transfer effect of heavy braking, you'd want the rears to brake less and not lock up.
Set it about 1/3 way and give it a test run, if it locks at the rear, back it off, if it locks at the front, you could do a little more rear braking. But its a very rough way of setting it, unfortunately.

the correct way involves pressure gauges fitted inline to the rear calipers, so its not an easy diy job. what i do is set it so that on level ground with a 'normal' weight in the back the slack is just taken out of the spring, this method has never failed me.
basically when set like this you have set it to minimum possible rear brake assist under normal conditions (which is what you want!) then any weight in the back will start adding assistance
