NWM18 - now with date & place confirmed!

Carrying on from http://www.vwgolfmk1.o…ewtopic&t=18599&start=110, a couple of different suggestions have come forwards for our next NW meet:

1. Sunday 15th April, at same place as NWM17 (Preston Brook). This also avoids the CGTI meet but coincides with the mk2dubclub meet. The chap from there (mk2dubclub on this forum) seems a thoroughly pleasent bloke and it might be a mutually good idea to combine/have them the same day. Let's face it, most of the convertibles are same age as Mk2 hatchbacks anyway….

2. A different date, for example Sunday 1st April. This avoids clashing with the CGTI meet on the previous Sunday, for Chester/North Wales

3. Alternating the meets between Preston Brook (nr Warrington) and The Wiggan Tree (nr J25 M6). Date to be agreed/suggested.

For info, Dano suggested:

How about alternating the venue, that way we avoid getting sucked into the other clubs? SWM do it to even out the travelling distance and it makes it fair to all memebers.

From what I can see the 1st April is free show wise, but the 15th clashes with Leighton Hall.

Elsecar at Leeds is also held on 8th April too, Easter Sunday so that another weekend out.

Yep, always a possibility to do something like that. Last summer we did mini-cruises a couple of times, to Southport and Blackpool. At the moment though, we just need to sort out a location and date for the initial place to meet! Then incorporate suggestions to liven things up!

Paul,

We went through all this LAST year.

Combining with another club LOSES our club identity and the whole reason for holding the meet in the first place is for the owners of Mk1's to get together and swap info. If we join with other VAG groups where does it end? CGTI for instance cover the whole scene but WE don't.

Keep it Mk1 only, keep it seperate and… if the members wish, swap between 2 locations to spread the travelling aspect out fairly.

The Wiggin Tree has served well for nearly 2 years without any complaints but I understand your view and travelling distances. I for one DO NOT vote for a combined meet with other models as we water down what we, the North West, started in May 05.

We don't invite Mk2's to Gaydon so why to a meet for mk1's.  :dontknow:

Rant over…. Thank you

We're not combining though, we're just making the time & place coincide. We had them at Wiggin Tree last year, they died out (November was the last meet and only 1 person came; then there was no incentive to hold the meets until Feb next year). SWM alternate their meets but its not successful, see the SWM18 thread (they cancelled it).

Walt suggested we stick with Preston Brook for a few meets and see if we can build up a good base of attendees. Late on last year you suggested if the Wiggin Tree meets didn't work out, try moving location.

Maybe its time to split the region into two meets at different locations? If we arrange it so they don't coincide, then people can attend both if they want to. The regions are ad-hoc anyway, there is no logic to their structure (some are regions of the country, some are 2 or 3 counties, and some are individual counties). So we could call the Preston Brook meet the "Cheshire" meet. I can change the regions pages at the side if needs be.

totally agree dano.....it is about mk1s of course, but its also about people and peoples contributions.and for me firstly its about mk1 passion first and 4 most.but hey a lot of admiration goes on between all vw enthusiasts models..why not...?? they might have a set of rims or interior which is mk1 orientated......mmmmmm sounds good......just a wee opinion dano nothing more!!! cheers stew

Personally i like the idea of a meet nearer manchester than cheshire. I know it is'nt that far, but we have members in south yorkshire/north lancashire which makes it a bit of a bugger really ( especially in a 1.1 4 speed   ). I propose we meet up like bigstew said and then cruise on manchester, regroup or stay in convoy to the gmex or similar, then drive back to the original meet place. howsabout that then?

Last year the meets dried up because winter set in, people tack the cars off the road, can't be bothered or are just scared of the dark! November was the last meet and 'I' throughly enjoyed myself in the car park on my own, there were no parking problems, break downs or queues at the bar!!!

As far as this year goes, I stick to my point that our club is for Mk1's only, we don't allow posts for any other marque even if thy're for the VW stable so why at the specific meets for our club. After all if you want to see Mk2's then a). buy one and join their club and b). see them at a national show (don't get me wrong, I like the Mk2,3,4's as well).

The Wiggin Tree as picked as a good location due to the members being around at the time of its inception (May 05) and has served well. To abandon that location as unsuitable just because we haven't met up in 3 months seems a little short sighted. It takes a lot of effort to rally people to meet up and to keep the momentum going. The Wiggin tree is easily accessed from the M6, M61, M65 and further South. The Preston Brook location is out on a limb on the M56 which makes it hard work and a longer drive for the more northerly owners, such as Bury, Rossendale, Accrington and Blackpool.

If the locations are spilt to encompass the 2 locations ie Lancs and Manchester (although Manchester is STILL part of lancs isn't it??!!) and Cheshire takes, well, Cheshire, Wales, Wirrall & Merseyside then thats fine with me.

At the end of the day its up to owners to make their choices and spend their money on fuel going to where they want to go.

Any other ideas?

Wiggin Tree isn't too hard to find, its a couple of miles from J27 of the M6.

I don't think its any more or less popular than any other location. Obviously a more rural area would contain less people within a given travelling distance. Preston Brook is nearer to Manchester, Liverpool, Warrington, Widnes, Runcorn, Chester and The Wirral, so it will statistically have more owners nearby (assuming an even coverage of Mk1s).

I think we need to accept the facts that regional meets, for whatever reason and in any region throughout the country, haven't been as popular as everyone had hoped. Its not just Wiggin Tree, or NW, but it seems to be all over the place. (But 6 cars and 1 caddy seems a decent enough turnout for February, IMHO). So we need to do something to make it more popular.

Mk2dubclub approached us and suggested we have the meets on the same day, it would be a 'synergy' of similar (but not the same) interests and can't harm the continued health of the meets. We have to accept that there aren't that many Mk1s on the roads any more and of those owners, only a proportion will be interested in meets, free on the given date, have their cars working, etc.

Say the numbers of Mk1s attending died down again to 3. If we were at the same place/time, then there could also be, say, 15 Mk2s and it would be a success rather than a failure. We know our cars are better, and I also suspect that a lot of Mk2 owners secretly wish they had a Mk1!

It all somewhat quaintly reminds me of the "Peoples' Front of Judea" in Monty Python's "Life of Brian", where they ostricise the "Judean People's Front" rather than uniting!!!!

I never suggested abandonning Wiggin Tree either - I suggested someone organise a meet there! Just try not to clash with 15th April, since there might be another meet nearby which people are at!

At the moment we've had:

1 suggestion for Manchester
1 vaguely for Preston Brook (Did I interpret this right, bigstew?)
1 for Preston Brook
1 against Preston Brook and for Wiggin Tree

Any more thoughts from others? I think whatever, we need to set a clear place, date & time, at least 3-4 weeks before the meet, so that people can plan around it etc.

I think that Preston Brook meet was a success, 6 mk1s and a caddy was a pretty good turn out for the time of year and weather in my opinion and there were at least 3 mk1 owners who came in a different car for whatever varied reasons. There also seem to be quite few messages from people who were planning to come but had to bail at the last minute (which I think is quite understandable and is bound to happen wherever)

I quite like the idea of meeting on the same day and in the same place as a Mk2 club. I don't feel that it has any indication of a change of attitude for the club. It seems perfectly clear that it would be a case of two clubs meeting in the same place at the same time not that we're starting to become 'the vw golf mk1/2 owners' club….

By the way does everyone know that it's gti spring festival at the pod on 15th april, I only just realised

nw meet

just like to throw my pennys worth in. i missed preston brook this time round due to no MOT im sure this is the case for a lot of people cars not ready for what ever reason. preston brook is a good place to meet nor far from the city centre and in easy reach for alot of other people chester liverpool etc etc i like the idea of a cruise even if it is only 6 or 7 cars as long as the few that are able to come have fun and get what they want from the meet. i have lived in manchester for 2 years now and only ever seen 2 other mk1s on the road so i would like to meet some mk1 lovers out there to have a good old chinwag with. come on people you cant please everyone out there. why not have a vote.

most votes win then do it again for the next meet easy. ;)
