Bottle tops. I'm not thinking that at all. But sure someone will agree with you..
Cant believe my dog locked himself in the car today whilst I was warming it up for drive out.. so was thinking to smash glass on day 1.. I rang AA..and whilst waiting managed to open door with 1 of my spare golf keys

Oh, and if you do decide to replace the wheels - then I would be interested in buying the existing ones for my Mk2- if you decide to sell them?
Thanks.

Fxxk I never noticed missing borbet cap. Anyways today back from Saudi. I replaced the hex bolts holding calipers on the rear for nice stainless caphead. Then inspected the exhaust hangers. That's next job i think I'll do..and maybe roof seal.

Hi Kenneth have you any top condition RAs in silver you might sell for my 8v Mk2? If so, what size are they, as could be interested (and it would HELP in your decision making as you say you are fully stocked

The dealers back then were fitting gold BBS wheels to these GTI's in case you're interested.

Today..or this afternoon I decided to have a go at sorting the sunroof seal. Well at least there's no rust. But im wondering why no clip to cover the join and why the previous joint was on the side. I've gone with joint at the rear next to the raintray where there is better chance of the leak being channelled. Also to protect bolt heads little bit of glue in the head to preserve the cross cut. Not really a job I fancied doing on the cold but needs must.

Hi, Kenneth, you may know this or more but thought it might be useful?
The outer seal is not actually a proper 'seal' (for water) it is there to keep the worst from cascading in and to keep leaves and rubbish out. That is why there isnt a clip on it and so the side is okay and I think the new ones come shaped like that, generally. If you put joint at the back water could sit on it for longer.
Does it actually leak into the car? The photo's makes me think its all good and your replacing because of the cosmetics or ageing?
Does your sunroof when closing 'pop up' on the last few turns so that it is flush or very fractionally lower at the front with the roof line, and slightly higher at the rear? This stops water driving into the front or sitting on the rear panel gap There are ramps/(cogs you might call them), which should be adjusted, each side, to get panel level left to right/front to back when closed. Sometimes due to wear these jump and the sunroof drops one side, and any misalignment will increase the chances of a damp head liner. Most importantly, make sure the 4 exit tubes let water pass through! test these individually as (especially the rear) can block with rust, or, debris blown in.Be careful not to dislodge inner connection tubes with strong air or anything you might want to put down them.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Marcus… theres a bit of water coming in to the headliner. And the seal had become detached completely on 1 edge.. I understand the function is to act as first seal and not to be 100% water tight but I'm thinking get it sorted then removes 1 concern. The drains I'll check with water and a wire to ensure clean. Sadly my garages are full of spares and not cars..so i was mainly trying to eliminate any leaks into the car. Next is to fit rain scuttle /cover trays in engine bay. I did try seal to the side but my head said put it to the rear.

Hi Kenneth I guessed you would know a fair bit about these and your right, you need to fix asap as dropped head linings/ wet interiors are a disaster. That Mk2 looks lovely so its worth sorting as soon as you can. Pretty sure you will fix it okay as you suggest.
Your obviously a bit of a fan of the odd VW and I understand as your not alone in never having enough space! You need to get them inside if you can- but I am sure I do not need to tell you that one.I cannot speak, of course, as at one time, with my 'motley collection' and friend's cars ("we just need to put it somewhere for a week or two"….) I had 9 Vw's from the 80/90s period, poking out of various buildings. I then Stupidly I flogged off lots at what are now rubbish prices… One original rust free bread van in particular with v little on the clock brought me £800 and I am pretty sure one very like it its being advertised at over 3k somewhere at the moment.
On a separate subject thanks for the wheel pics. Their good not quite what I am after, but I have another friend who might be interested in them, or some of them, will show him and ask. Sorry to keep asking about wheels!

Well I got back from Saudi to start my toys on the drive..mk2 16valver first..started first time..stood for 3 weeks. I let him warm up for 20mins..then I took him out for a drive..towards paint shop. But on way he suffered lost of spark..and ground to a unceremoniously stop outside the local nuthuouse. It's here he remains to this day..tried coil.tried jump-start. Cleaned and changed distribution cap.next I'see distributor and ecu. He needs a spark.and belts…then can go get smartened up..
