Hi.
Although i don't own a mk1 golf, i have a mk2 scirocco and they are similar so thought you may be interested in what i have been doing. I do come on here to linger and look at the mk1's!
I have owned the car for about 16 years. here it is when i bought it all those years ago for £130. Its a storm model, so one of 300 in Havavna brown with tan leather. amazingly it had mot and tax and i drove it home!
It had a full (budget) respray and i did some repair work which at the age of 17 was pretty horiffic. new arches, patches here and there, but generally turned a blind eye and didn't really do a great job but i ended up with this which i was very proud of and drove it daily for years.
in about 2009 it started needing a few bits after getting driven into, vandilised and then a relationship breakdown i decided to park it up until i had the time, money and interest to fix it.
lovely. they even took the car cover off to do this!
so in about july 2015 i decided to get her out, tidy her up and mot here. I had a poke around and found a bit or rust….everywhere! heres a few examples
quality workmanship by the bodyshop years ago.
even the bloody 4 branch had rusted away!
so work began. everything pretty much ended up getting replaced, fuel tank, fuel lines, brake lines, calipers, bearings, discs, pads etc etc. new arches were shipped from belgium. it was all knackered.
before flatting and polishing
after a flat and polish
and that brings me to this weekend where is started the rebuild…in the dark it seems! and was too busy to take pictures.
home made headlining. not perfect, but good enough for £25.
not the biggest of garages!
hope that was interesting. I will update every so often.

Welcome along to the club, cracking story and thanks for sharing.
We've a couple of members here who own Scirocco's as well as Mk1's, so hopefully there'll read this as well at some point and say hello.
Getting hard to find these days in any condition!

Yes I've been following this thread on another site, lots of hard work gone into this car.

Nice story with a (nearly completed) happy endingJust love it when someone rescues their early love of their life. Your a star as it would have been long gone without your enthusiasm and tenacity. Love the old fashioned colour!
Have you done more since the post? If so put up the pics.

Wow really nice write up. Thumbs up for the length of time owned and the highs and lows of the problems of scraps and damage done to the ricco. So nice the read up and all the pics to date. Best luck and enjoy the drive. Will keep a lookout for the updates…. mk1gti79
