My daily golf 1 1.6 diesel ''project''

Post

I was thinking of a nice way of using my photo's and here I am.
No better way to share the photo's with fellow golf owners.
That said I want to apologise for the bad English but I'm from Holland.
Same reason my steering wheel is on the other side :Pwen i bought the car it had been sitting for 17 years in a barn.

At first look the car looks clean, but along the process I found allot of cover ups :(.

Lucky me the interior is in pretty good condition already.

The Golf is getting a new home!

The project of restoring this car is learning process for my self and a hobby of me and my dad.
I'm lucky of having Al the needed tools and space to do all the work my self.
This is the list of things we are planning to do:

-  Full respray.
- New wheels and tires.
- Engine rebuild.
- Brake rebuild.
- And all the small things we will find along the way.

First impression after a bit of a clean job.

One dirty engine coming out of this golf.

Looks disgusting doesn't it?

First of lets give it a good clean.

Looks a bit bether, stil a long way to go.

After pulling it apart we decided to send the cylinder head to a specialist for a full revision.
Same goes for the cylinder's those are getting honed.

New parts .

A little glimps of the inside (A).

Engine back together and almost ready for some paint!

Some primer.

What you guy's think of the color?

Glimps of the assembled engine.

So with the engine pretty much done we did a lot of welding on the body.
This is my first welding on a car so bare in mind im still a apprentice (A).
I wil show some before and after pictures, but we did the propper welding in the inside
aswel.

Some great assistance from the old man :D.

Got some new front fenders aswel.

I dealt with all the rust on the body. For the minor spots i have a handy sand blaster i can use.
Preview below.

Fixing the battery holder.

Preparing the engine bay for the diesel.

Doesn't she sit naice? :D

The engine fired up right away!

I removed the front suspension parts.

After rebuilding the front suspension i got rit of all the rust and repainted.

Replaced all covers, cleaned it and new grease.

After finding out the brakecylinders were done for i bought new front callipers and new brake cylinders for the back.

I found some wheels i think are really cool!
They need some work but i think the end result will look great!

Close up of the corrosion on the wheels.

After a lot of wet sanding and polishing i think they look perfect now!

Time for some paint!

Lots of grinding and dust.

Grinding gets the worst out of me ;P

First parts in base coat.

Some filler work in progress.

I bought some new emblem's for the grill, coudn't wait to put them on and see how it looks.

Next week its going to the paint boot, were we wil do the final two layers paint.

Hi, welcome to the club

Nice looking car, really like the tweed seats. Your welding looks great for a first time too.

Good luck with the project.

It was all going so well until the new wheels.....

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.
