1983 Mk1 Golf GTI 1.8L Nut and Bolt Restoration

Post

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and hope this post / plea for knowledge is OK.

Where to start…I've bought a 1983, 3 door , black, VW Mk1 Golf, 1.8L GTI with sunroof.

Recorded Mileage: 162613

I've asked at a couple of garages in my home town who are able to help and one in particular who has restored a T1 to a beautiful standard. I've seen a specialist who are Golf enthusiasts on-line who I will contact.

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated..I'll get some photos up soon.

Cheers!
Ryan

Welcome Ryan! ryanosaurus

It sounds a big project! For the budget you've got it's doable and not silly money. You'd end up with a car worth around what you've got in to it, pending finished quality of work.

Especially if it's a keeper then the money isn't so important.

There's a lot of knowledge on here to help you on your way and don't forget about considering paid membership. You'll soon get your £20 back in discount on all those parts that you're going to have to buy

Hi Andy…and all,

Thanks for getting back to me..and reassuring to read it's not just a pipe dream. Still looking into the best option on choosing a mechanic to work with..would anyone recommend dealing with a respected local mechanic or finding a specific mechanic who is used to working on Golfs / VW's?

I will be keeping this car but obviously if I need to sell for whatever reason, it's good to know I'll see a similar return..though the whole reason I'm doing this is because I've been staring at these cars before I could even ride a push bike.

I've got some photos here to show you all how this project is beginning…
