Big twin instead of your normal 4 pot

Hi folks,
I'm just condidering a Mk 1 engine conversion, I was going to go down the busa/blackbird/zx12r route, front engined rear wheel drive, but people seem to think there's not enough torque, soooooo, I was wondering if anybody has tried sticking a big twin in there instead, Ducati/RSVP/TL 1000 ect…? Could be interesting, or is there a reason I've never seen one?? Thoughts please anyone?
Cheers, si.

It didn't seem to be a problem for H R Engineering's Hayabusa bike engined RWD golf  :)

And you could also bolt on a turbo :)

Yeah, that seems to be the easiest option, the busa engines also seem to be the dearest used too, honda blackbirds and kwak zx12r seem to be a fair bit cheaper. thought about a twin because it's a bit different, and torquey and grunty, more low down torque… Or maybe a triple….. Hmmmmmm so many options! I've emailed hr engineering last night so I'll see what he comes back with….

find a triumph rocket engine shouldnt be short of torque then.  :ninja:

any bike engine will be down on torque in a car because its designed for something that weighs 200kg.

the thing id consider is do you like driving something something revvy like a type r and work well on a track or do you want to cruise and be able to stick it in top gear and pull because you will not find this from a bike engine.

Triumph rocket was actually what I was looking for last night, mind was going over all the bikes I could think of… There was one on eBay but it's in America…maybe I need to be sensible a stick with a vw engine and tune the nuts off it, would be a much cheaper option perhaps…..

Id stick to fitting a car engine just fr the sake of power and torque.

If you got a bike engine running 200bhp v's a car engine at 200bhp the car would have more torque and a lower Rev range.

Then again if you wanted something that sounds awesome at 11,000 rpm then got a for a flat four bike engine.

For me it depends on what your planning on using it for.

Bike engine for a show car with track use.

Car engine for easier conversion, more bhp and torque still do tracks and shows.

Don't get me wrong a busa turbo will put out plenty of bhp but at what cost compared to a 20vt?

But you would get a 6 speed sequential gearbox for less than £10k!
if you use a rear diff with a relatively low gear ratio then the lack of torque shouldn't be a problem.

I had considered building one myself. Was planning on using a Subaru rear subframe and diff etc. you can get a number of different ratio diffs depending on the model of scooby. Combined with a slightly smaller wheel/tyre size it would effectively lower the gearing and provide greater torque to pull you along.

Cheers Kev, thanks for the advice, very helpful. My heads a bit battered with it all now, I'm now thinking sticking with a car engine, just to make life simpler, was actually thinking of a Skoda vrs motor, or still tempted by a type R… Would be quick with either I guess but very different power delivery, I like the idea of a screaming type R motor I must admit. Time will tell I guess, I'll let you know how I get on! Lovely build by the way mate, looks gorgeous.
