Raising of the black pearl... sinking of my dreams

Post

As some of you may know I have been attempting to get a Golf for years, offering many sub standard daiys in PX.. this never seemed to work though….. I finally got myself a project and after a long wait have started to do some work on it.

When i got it it had already had some work done, Kr swap, rear panel tacked in and some other bits and bobs however there is still some rot to find and kill! so anyway here's a start of what I have done…

week 1…
It all started off quite well, got the car on axle stands after finding somewhere that wasn't rotten to jack off of and  without killing me or the car
2017-04-03 15.02.44.jpg

Then the rear beam and tank need to come out so I could get to the rear sub frames and not blow myself up when i started cutting.. surprisingly no threads were snapped and it came out quite nicely

2017-04-03 15.45.35.jpg

Stripped the suspension off and will be stripping it down for a spray and some disc brakes but that can wait for now..

Next the tank!
this is where it started to show it's age, many a rusted and ruined bolt meant a few cut hoses but all in all it wasn't too bad to get the tank out and free
2017-04-06 13.49.13.jpg

Now the annoying part, i started looking at the drivers side sub frame, it looked rusty but not toooo bad..  2017-04-06 15.26.07.jpg

Then with the trusty rust hunting screwdriver I had a bit of a prod about and it went from not too bad to bad.. 2017-04-06 15.52.11.jpg

Then the grinder and this is when i decided to go home before i cut the whole thing up out of annoyance and the need to find some actual metal so this is how it's sat now..

Tune in next week to see if there is any metal!

There is metal, the bonnet looks solid!

Shouldn't be too bad in the cold light of day, get the wire cup brush on it and give it a clean-up, may help to see the good and the bad before you start cutting again.

Deep breath, bit at a time and it'll all be reet ;)

(Hope you cleaned-up my tools   )

Just take your time, that's what I'm teaching my son.
Slower is faster
Measure twice, cut once

If in doubt, drag the old man out of the Pub and pour lots of coffee down is throat and get him on it!

Well done for gettin git on the axle stands without bendin or breaking owt! That's half the battle right there

Erm I think you may have killed an axle stand though, judging from the photo  :P

Yup, clean it all up before cutting owt else apart.
It's only steel and can all be re-made.
If I can manage it, anyone can

I shall be tuning in for next weeks episode, possibly entitled 'Search for the shiny metal' ;)

Hairyarse  I think there's some metal closer than the bonnet… I hope!! I gave them a good rub down in oil? thats how you're meant to treat tools right?

Shughy Cheers mate, who's this master you speak of? not yet met him

golf  cabrio That's my plan, slow and steady, I'm not used to stripping things down and repairing it all when it's covered in rust, I'm used to nice and tidy stainless! if only it was stainless…. He can't get to the pub at the minute due to his somewhat broken foot so currently it's a case of carrying him to the car and generally being his carer

borednow  There were some scary moments when i jacked it, but it's all good now!! It had enough of balancing the rear beam as i took of some hoses, thankfully there were more than the 4 holding the car up     I think it's time I learned a bit more about steel fabrication! Should be reet though! I might steal that title….

Ashton09 From what I can see at the minute this is by far the worst part of it.. I hope! Should be fine, just time to hunt down something to weld to

Bit of a late update, not done all that much but here goes week 2 and 3

started off by seaming up the rear end to avoid cutting out more.. 2017-04-12 16.59.14.jpg

Not my best attempt at welding, but it'll do for the first time MIGing in a few years.

then i decided to take the passenger door and wing off as these both need a bit of tlc
2017-04-17 16.29.01.jpg 2017-04-17 16.29.07.jpg

Ft shiney bits…

then i had to attack the rust, decided to go from the sill and inand found the extent of the damage… 2017-04-28 10.05.52.jpg
2017-04-28 10.19.42.jpg
IMG-20170428-WA0015.jpeg

Now with the rot removed i started to weld it up and realised that im really bad at welding after nights so decided to call it a day.
IMG-20170428-WA0017.jpeg

so thats where it's at, drivers side rot is gone, time for some welding up! if anyone has any pics of how the jack point should look, it would be much appreciated!!

I like the big pile of rust left on the floor after removing the wing and door.

God knows how many bin bags I've filled with rust, dirt and rusted out metal.

Soon be all solid again and you can borrow lots of money from the old man for all the new and shiny stuff

Look the work you are taking on is very advanced for a young man and I like many respect you for that! 👍

You seem to be level headed so take your time and if you're not sure please ask the club for advice.

As for your Dad, he's a great guy and a teacher but like they say, "If you can't do, teach!" 🤣

Looks like it's going well, body work is a labour of love and as far as the welding goes just remember 0.6 wire is best with argosheild lite gas. And ALWAYS remove any galvanising before welding 1 because it makes life a real pain in the butt and gives inclusions in the weld and 2 it's REALLY! Bad for you. Keep up the good work I'm sure it's gonna look awesome.
