newly purchased 20v T. strip down begins

Post

so after 10 years of my golf being in storage i finally decided to pull my finger out and crack on with it little bits at a time.
i came across a complete ARZ package that i had been watching on ebay for a few weeks and decided it was too good to let go without buying even if it ends up in storage along the way as my project isnt going to be finished any time soon.
lucky enough i have managed to store the engine at work so i decided to start a strip down and clean up of the lot and get rid of what i dont need and paint up the stuff i do.

i will however be after some guidance and help with the other members on here who have completed the converison to help me along the way.

can anyone tell me exactly what i can get rid off for starters but still keep it a suitably running engine on the stock ECU ?

with the package i got the following:

Complete engine with manifolds,turbo,pipework etc
02A gearbox with drive shafts and cable change tower/cables
DBW throttle pedal
radiators,intercooler,fans
ECU
both parts of the loom

( i have noticed on the looms aswell that there is no OBD port nor DBW connector as i beleive these are part of the interior loom? correct me if i am wrong of course… ) can these be retro fitted as i will be sending my looms and ecu off at some point for the splicing and conversion for my golfs fusebox.

im hoping to go along the route of a smooth bay and have a few pics for inspiration and guidance but i could do with a few pointers as to what can go to help me with this..

Out of the truck and found and palleted up for easy access and moving when i squeeze in some time on it :

I will be adding pics along the way but this is going to be a long project as i live in sheffield , the car is in storage down in leicestershire and my engine is in my workshop on site at work :(i really do need a miracle right about now haha!!

Hi and welcome.

Have you any photos of the car? What did the engine originally come out for?

hi pazwaa, thanks mate.

the car originally came off the road around 9/10 years ago due to a core plug failure resulting in a nasty puddle of oil which is probably on the M1 still somewhere haha.
unfortunately the engine didnt survive so had to be towed home, i thought this was a perfect oportunity to restore what i wanted and replace the engine.

it was a 1.8 carb which i removed and had  set of weber 45 dcoe's on in replacement.

due to work commitments and job change the golf got put on the back burner as i spend 90% of my working life away from home so the time was non existent.

heres a few pics of the car in its current state from when i last done a little bit on it..

i really am looking forward to continuing with the build but its going to be a long winded process as the car is in storage down in leicestershire and i live in rotherham now due to a move with work. hoping to get a full weekend on it at least once  month when time allows me to do so!

I know how you feel. I travel with work loads, so not much time to do anything on the car. I live in Kent and used to keep the car in Essex, so it was either spend that day doing it, or don't bother… finding a whole day free is pretty much impossible.

Still, the car is much closer now and hopefully in a couple of months, it'll be at my house and I might be able to continue what I started…

I feel your pain  :(

it is annoying especially when in the last year my mate has brought a caddy diesel, had a complete respray with air ride etc and a vr6 installed. ( i guess this is the different between building one and spending big bucks on letting someone else do it )

i religously spent a few hours a night on the car when i lived at home then i started working away alot and then it got more and more and then work started going abroad which at the time was great!! i was working in africa when i was 22 and australia at 23 whilst my mates were grinding away in there factory jobs ( no disrepsect ). working life was incredible but would of been more so if it allowed me time on the old gal.
i then moved from leicester to sheffield in 2013 as i was sick of travelling as i landed a job and a new built asphalt plant ( i was a contractor at the time and ended up on the books of aggregate industries ) happy days! but not happy days for the golf!

heres hoping though in the next few months i can really crack on with here and get the ball rolling. although the pics dont look the best there isnt really a massive amount that actually needs doing to her!
