New Custom handmade Exhaust for my stand 1.8 8v 83 Mk1

Post

It's still in the prototype phase, but I think as a starting point it sounds alright.

Here's the video link,

any constructive criticism or tips would be much appreciated !

At the time of filming the air fuel mixture was slightly too high, this is why it was puffing a little during up shifts. I've since tweaked it.

I'd advise watching in HD, as that offers the best sound quality. It was recorded using a GoPro, the audio seems to pick up the important parts.

Plus I know I already posted this in general chat but I haven't had any responses so far and any feedback would be great!

Kind regards,

Bill.

Hi Bill

I like it - sounds good!!

It sounds almost like there's a little Alfasud lurking in there somewhere!

What did you make the exhaust up with? (and don't say 'pipe! lol)

Thanks for the feedback !

Still not sure if I want less rasp and more low-end sound as it is annoying in the cabin. When you have the windows down the rasp is more audible than the rest of the tone. It doesn't have carbs so the engine doesn't make much noise, people have suggested drilling holes in the intake, however I don't want to butcher the car.

When it was pulled out the shed it had a Borsal (I think that's the was the brand) "standardish" exhaust, with the normal centre resonator to back box configuration.

The end of the exhaust was fairly rusty so I sanded it back, and to pay homage to the dual slanted tailpipes on the mkII, I decided to angle it. I removed the center resonator as it started to get pretty rusty.

I've done about 2500 miles with it so far, had to make some adjustments but so far it's been fairly successful, considering I had next to no knowledge with welding prior to putting back together.

Sounds like a good home-brew then!!

With 2500 miles under its belt then it is bedded-in, so I guess the note wont change at all much now.

Perhaps it ends up an ongoing project that you just tweak now and again? :)

Does sound really good and as Andy said it's got that Alfa twang to it from the 70's and 80's!
