Long story short I bought my mk1 a few weeks ago and I broke down on the way home! Was gutted to say the least.
Luckily I have a highly rated and recommended garage local to me that did a full appraisal on the car to investigate and identify any issues that need dealing with.
Good news is the shell is solid, the interior and wheels are mint and the engine is healthy (despite the break down). This was due to the way the car has been put together basically - shaved bay so everything hidden and not in the most logical way to be perfectly honest.
Anyway everything is getting sorted properly so the car will be safe and reliable as it can be. Including being fully rewired. Can't wait to get it back, clean it, use it and get to know it properly!

Looks ace. What was the cause of the breakdown?
Thanks.
So basically the fans for the rad work off of a manual switch on the dash (this is being changed to work automatically by temp sensor) and they failed due to a faulty fuse or wiring. This caused a coolant pipe to burst as it got too hot when I got stuck in traffic.
Long story short it didn't cause engine damage however the set up is just not built for reliability and safety.
The leads from the spark plugs are routed down the back of the block along the exhaust manifold it's pretty mad. It's all being sorted though.
