1985 Karmann Cabriolet

It's back!

in it's home for thee near future:

Covered in dust since being sat in the bodyshop for a few days so needs a good clean. Only had enough time to get her in the garage and go back to work. Hoping to get started on it after work. Task number one - fit loom :)

Started small by putting the boot rubber seal back on but then spent hours trying to tackle the loom. It was a nightmare workign out what was what and where it needed to go. It was useful going thorugh the mammoth amount of photos I had taken when I was pulling it apart.

Still need to finish the position of it near the fusebox as it doesn't sit quite right. I'll do that then don't know which way I'll go next. Need to buy some stuff but can't afford anything this month.

Need to start sorting everything out for the powder coaters soon too.

Looking good buddy. Wiring looms scare the hell out of me

Only have the opportunity to do stuff in the evenings at the moment and there's no electricity in my garage at the moment which means no decent light :(

Have managed to put in the rear windows:

but I ran in to a problem with the fronts. I replaced my doors as the old ones were scabby and didn't take the runners out. The new drivers door has a runner but the passenger side doesn't so I need to pick one of these up:

Also got the roof temporarily up to stop it filling the car with water. The garage roof leaks (hoping to sort this on Saturday morning if I get the time):

Have also fitted most the rubbers around the doors. I have a question though. Is there a special glue you can use to bond the seals to the bodywork?

I will need it before I can fit the rubber along the top of the windscreen.

Thanks for looking!

Got a few more bits done. Fitted the driver side window:

Still needs finishing but it goes up and down.

Had to take the roof half off as it was just chucked on and wasn't perfectly central. Now fitted inclusing the headlining all neat:

Roof fitted better and a preview of how the back end will look. Lights are just placed in to see what it looked like:

Lights won't be to everyones taste but I like them.

Will eventually replace the roof with a mohair but I just want to get it on the road first.

No I could have it done in a couple of months IF I had the money. I'm quessing it'll be done some time in the early new year though. I'd still like to say Christmas :)

Haven't been doing much in the last week as I've been moving but I went round yesterday and started cleaning the engine up. It's unbelievable the amount of cr8p built up on the engine. Still need to get a brush and some more gunk to get through the rest of the grime

This is it before I started:

And after:

It's a start. There's still loads to get off though.

Things purchased today:
Black engine paint
Silver engine paint
12 metres of under carpet felt
seat guides
assorted nuts/bolts

Things to purchase today:
Spread on Gunk
small stiff brush

Hoping to get most of the engine done this week and at the weekend I need to start sorting out what needs powder coating. I'll then send stuff off to the powder coaters and continue on the interior. Next pay day I'll fit the engine as I'll be needing to buy quite a bit of stuff like poly bushes.

Degreaser and brushes purchased :)

Engine is fully degreased and ready to be painted but I started on the interior and got it fully felted then carpets, seats and knee bar went in.

Seat Guides:

Also had some window issues so fixed them and made her water tight. Also had to fit the door handles properly. Next to do is make some membranes for the doors, fit the rear door cards and paint the engine. I was going to do some more today but not sure I can get the motivation with the weather outside and being full up of fry up mmmmm

Looking most excellent dude.

I take it you've moved the ladder now so it don't fall on the car? (top pic)

Yeah it's been jammed in between the girder and the roof now to clear floor space. It's nice not having the seats and carpet laying about the garage getting dirty, mainly because the garage is used by 5 people and caters for 5 VWs :)

It's been a while since an update but I have been doing stuff, just nothing picture worthy. I decided it was about time I got all my bits off to the powder coaters and also finish off the underneath of the car. As you can see from inside the back arch, there was bits needing removing and painting with underseal.

I removed the rear axle, suspension, brakes, wishbones etc and started making a pile for the powder coaters.

These are a bit worse for wear. Any ideas on how to get them apart as they are rusted solid? Or is it worth just buying replacements?

I also can't remove the discs from the hubs!!!! I've grinded the screw out on one coz it rounded and the other is removd but the discs wont budge. Any ideas on this one too?

Another query is regarding these:

Ones the accumulator but what parts do I need here to get everything in a working state?
Guessing it's best to buy second hand as I saw the brackets are about 90 quid new?

Side repeaers - was thinking of going clear but the smokes look pretty good

My pile of stuff growing.

I took everything down to the powder coaters expecting to just drop it off and pickit up when they are done….how wrong I was. They are booked in for the 6th January. A few parts will be black but the majority will be going a different colour to give it some sparkle and contrast under the car.

I then moved on to sorting the underside of the car out. I started on the arches as the suspension turrets and mounts were untouched. I rubbed down any rough bits and treated all the bare metal with Kurust. I then started to give everything a coat of Underbody Seal with waxoyl. Unfortunately I was using my phone continuously as a light under the car so only managed to get a couple of photos befoe it ran out.

Kurust on the underside of the engine mount.

Top mount underside painted up with underbody seal.

Front arch done.

Very happy with the finish. I managed to get all arches done as well as the underside of the back of the car and also the majority of the underside of the car before the tin ran out. Need to purchase some more now to finish it off and I'll take some pictures of the finished arches/underneath.

I'll finish that off this week and then see what I feel like doing next :)
