Update time :)

Been a little while and the Golf is MOT'd for the year but decided to change my wheels and a few other changes :o   .

But to do that needed to change over the brake calipers.

The new wheels I've had for years in storage after having them refurbished. They are Borbet Atiwe cheese hole wheels in 4 x 100 15" 7J ET21.

The offset is quite aggressive but fit with 10mm spacers with the Wilwoods or no spacers with the Girling 256mm calipers.

The Wilwoods will go on my caddy when it's ready but have 256mm Girling jobbies with the rare Audi carriers which bolt directly to the hub.

So the calipers needed rebuilding and I had a complete rebuild kit with new pistons, seals and carrier guide pins and boots but gave them a good de rust with Bilt Hamber Deox C.

That Bilt Hamber product took 30 minutes and this was the outcome:

Now I wanted to get the Golf a tiny bit lower, the wishbones are horizontal so didn't want to go any further but unfortunately the sump is very low on the 24v Vr6's even the later Mk5 version I have with the shorter sump so didn't want any speed bump issues.

So have this:

So what this does is take the droop out of the suspension lifting the car 50mm on what ever coilovers you have. You can only fit up front on a mk1 as the rear turrets won't accommodate the lift cups.

So finished the boot install:

Cheers chap. No issues at all, when I was running the aero 16's and G60 15" steel wheels there was 4 inches of clearance.

Now running on the lower profile tyres and a bit lower I have 3 inches. The engine is quite far forward on the mounts in a mk1 so you would hit the sump first before the wheels ever had a chance to go over anything.

 This is my clearance:

Managed to repair the one broken centre cap. It was missing a prong so made a new one from stainless steel and tig welded a bead to the edge so it can grip.

I've epoxied the prong to the cap:

Then cleaned and dyed the caps black. I have new stickers arriving :).

This is a great project, love the fact you can't stop tinkering with it!

Ha thank you, I've tried to make it a no compromise vehicle but I also don't like clutter, visibly or where it adds unnecessary weight.

Especially with this engine conversion people are deleting brake servo's, removing heater systems etc. I've managed to keep all of this by trial and error. It's very tight in the passenger side rear of the engine bay but works.

The sump is something people should be aware of with this conversion. If you want to go lower then it could be potentially troublesome.

I think I have the right level of drop without it being unpractical and to be honest I could've got away without fitting the air cup system but there will always be that time where you could get caught out by a nasty speed bump or slope and I don't want to carry 2 planks around with me :).

Do you remember what clutch/flywheel combo you used? I note the usual g60/vr6 option doesn't have enough holes in the flywheel for the mk5 24v.
