Mellow Yellow 3.2ltr 24v Conversion

So finished off the rear disc conversion this morning but this wasn't straight forward at all.

VW Heritage didn't supply the correct bolts in their conversion  kit. They are hilariously incorrect, 4 enormous bolts which I assume were intended for mounting the carriers to the hub and 4 tiny bolts for the carriers to calipers. I ended up purchasing the bolts designed for the mk4 calipers and carriers but that also caused issues.

There is no way to fasten the hub to carrier bolts without modifying the end of the axle to create clearance, also the bolts are far too long so need cutting down. Is there some alternative bolts that are better or is this just the way it is?

And then the handbrake cable that came with the VW Heritage kit lol

Far too short .

Has anyone run in to this issue and could let me know the correct one to get for the Mk4 Golf 226mm calipers as it's going to rub big time.

This is the part number of the handbrake cable that was supplied

Then trial fitted the alloys that are going on once it's all finished.

I think I've sorted the handbrake cable issue. It appears that the handbrake cables aren't even listed with the VW Heritage kit but they supplied the Scirroco 16v ones which only work with mk2 calipers.

I re checked the VW Heritage listing and they suggest getting custom length ones from C & R Enterprises which are compatible with mk3 and mk4 Golf calipers.

Just bought some but boy they were expensive. This is the link to help anyone in the future: https://www.candrenterprises.co.uk/shop/conversion-handbrake-cables-pair.html

Hi Rich,

I need to know more about this….

Where did you get it from please? I’ve recently re-wrapped my exhaust and changed the boot but could do with some heat protection.

Rich… I had the same problem using rocco cables on Mk4 rear calipers. I was looking into custom handbrake cables too, but this was my  cheaper solution -

Handbrake cables, right this ones been on my mind for awhile and decided like most people to try out the scirocco 16v cables, but because I have the mk4 rear brake setup they literally just don't fit under the car well. The cable length is actually fine and sit where they need to by the handbrake, but would have sat far too close the exhaust for my liking. Some guy mentioned on my instagram post to try Mk2 Golf cables to which I had much better success. I had to bring the outa sleeving back abit  for the actual cable to reach the handbrake, but they work an absolute treat. They now sit in the actually space's that the handbrake cable is meant to go, sit around the rear beam and slot into the floor holes perfectly.

Length comparison between scirocco 16v cable (bottom) vs standard Mk2 Cable (top)

Scirocco cable fits fine at the handbrake lever but sat far too close to the exhaust and under the rear beam rather than around it. The Mk2 cable sat much better under the car but didnt reach the lever arm.

So pulled the cap off the Mk2 handbrake cable and cut the sleeving down and then put the cap back over the sleeve and crimped it down.

The difference between standard Mk2 cable and the cut down mk2 version.

This is a rocco and cut down mk2 cable now sit perfectly from each other.

And how the Mk2 cables now sit around the rear beam rather than under it, with loads of clearance from the exhaust.

I found someone on ebay that made a one off batch of R32 expansion tanks similar to the 12v version Eurowise and other companies produce. Was really lucky to find it .

Ahh man, this is exactly what I need on the Mk2, don't suppose you have the sellers name at all?

Yeah no problem https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/junioro2519

Thanks for the guide on the handbrake cables, I already ordered up the C & R ones though but that is really useful to know in the future.

Well bit of a groundhog day  Back to sanding again. Almost there now, I want to get everything perfect so spending the time to get all the awkward nooks and crannies (which there are plenty of in the engine bay).

Christmas came early, Mark from Classic VW hooked me up with some KW anti sway bars. My car was never fitted with any so he also supplied the stock mounting brackets.

Looking good as always..

Im guessing you will mount both sway bars ? I read somewhere that the front one doesn't help that much, specially not with that big engine in front.  ? The rear one though should be like a world in difference..

How big is the rear one in diameter ?

Hi chap,

The rear is 25mm in diameter. Front one is 21mm. As mine never had them I'm sure it will make a tiny difference :)

Well, mine didn't have anyone either, and I only bought a GTI rear sway.

Could be found to start with the rear one only on yours and then try to fit the front one to see if there is a difference.. I would like to leave the front without, mostly for the weight on the front axel.
