Chin up mate !!! Dig deep with it. I'm struggling with mine since I've owned it a month and half I haven't once driven it without something going wrong. Every time I drive it something breaks !!!

Thing is just have a quick look out of the window at it …………. See you can't be mad at it long lol.

Have a great Christmas

Cheers mate, Its just frustrating knowing that if I had had the head skimmed and even pressure tested properly by the engine shop the first time I could have found out the problem and fixed it straight away!

Im hopefully picking up a new head next weekend and swapping over my cam etc. into that to hopefully solve the coolant burning issue. I will also take this head to be inspected properly at an engine shop. Once fitted with yet another headgasket kit with more new headbolts I will pray to the engine gods that my problem is solved. Should It turn out that the block is warped and the problem persists then I will be forced to sell my golf and buy a something less infuriating like a GeeWiz….

I thought you'd took it on a run and decided the HG is fine??

If its not boiling up or loosing water I'd find something else to worry about.

So did i!! Then I took it out the next day and the same again, steam on start up but instead of going away once it warmed up, the steam just carried on and once it had cooled down I noticed that the coolant level had gone down… its strange how the symptoms keep coming and going  :(

Water level gone down a lot? Burning hydrocarbons in oxygen produces water, shown as steam in the exhaust esp on cold days. Is it pressuring the coolant system (rubber hoses very hard)?

not a huge amount but it is definately going down. Also the steam is very evident, its not a small amount, its a fairly hefty amount. But yes they do pressureise quite well

I picked up a new head today, its got mud and gunk in it and will need stripping down, cleaning, resurfacing and the lot. Although, I think ive already redered it scrap by trying to remove the valve stem seals and soring the bore for the tappets  :'(

I had hoped that my engine was supposed to have dowel pins to locate the head and mine had just gone missing but I cant see and listed on vagcom so I dont this its even that!

If anyone wants a free mk1 pm me before I set mine on fire… O_o

Im just hitting walls with every turn though. I think the new head is damaged now thanks to my rubbish valve spring compressor

Nice manifold! :)

I wouldn't have thought the damage on the rocker cover flange is an issue. New gasket and gasket sealer should take care of it I would have thought

Thanks, Ive wanted one for ages

It was more the scraping to the insides of the hydrolic lifters which i thought might have scrapped it  :( I managed to go back to the engine shop and they said I should take it off and let them pressure test it etc. or put an additive in because the coolant loss isnt actually that much so its probably only a slight crack or something. Although Im against putting additives in for this sort of thing as it seems a bit of a bodge!

Got me some carbs  :)

They need a good clean-up, a new trumpet (one was damaged and a new but small one was supplied as a spare), a new gasket set, a throttle linkage, trumpet securing parts, a dust cover and probably loads of other parts which are all staring to look worryingly expensive  :(

Still need to get to the bottom of the headgasket issue before i even start thinking about fitting these!

Cheers Matt,
Looking forward to getting them fitted :)

That looks a pretty comprehensive service kit, I was looking at one that was £40 for both carbs but not sure it included as much as that so might end up paying £60 now  O_o

Its the cost of the little things like studs, cover plates and trumpets that are missing which is going to make them yet more expensive :(

I know you don't like adding addatives to the water but they really can be a godsend. I had a welsh plug leak on my Ford Falcon and a can of Bars Leaks fixed it within 20 minutes. It was still OK when I sold that car a few years later.

Cheers
