No worries Sean! I changed my mind at the last minute about the firewall, I prefer it without the panel but was worried about sucking in fumes, then I thought I might as well just make a box and duct it out to the inner wing. I'm going to use a solid aluminium duct though to keep it looking neat, well thats the plan anyway!

More progress to report, the bay has had a second coat of high build after being flatted again.

and flatted again!

Spare wheel well has been flatted and now etch primed and stone chipped to keep it solid.

Front panel has also been taken back to bare metal and etch primed and stone chipped along with the back panel, my phone ran out of battery so couldn't get anymore pics yesterday but I will go and get some in a bit. I am ahead of schedule and my Dad is on his way over to help me so I am having the morning off!

I will get more pics up later on tonight/tomorrow.

Well it has been a long week/end and I have only just finished moving into the double garage, things have moved on in a big way! I will let the pics do the talking though.

So as promised the spare wheel well and boot floor have been etch primed and then grey stone chipped to give some sound deadening and also to protect everything! I will be sound deadening the whole car properly too but every little helps!

Then the front and rear panels got the same treatment to protect them.

Then the whole of the bottom of the car got a coat or primer surfacer to seal the stone chip and while it flashed off I put on the colour coat.  8)

I think the colour choice was good!  :DThen the bay got another coat of high build.

and finally the whole car got a good coat of high build!

I'm very pleased with the final result! It needs a guide coat and to be blocked off and then another coat of high build probably to get it perfect, but that will be in a couple of weeks when I get access to a booth. In the meantime I will be restoring all of the suspension parts and fitting them to the car so it can come off the spit and go back on it's wheels!

This is how she is currently living.

That means I need to restore the steering rack, front wishbones, rear subframe, fuel tank, brakes fuel lines and fuel pump etc. I have the majority of it and I will be either powder coating it all or using a good coat of POR 15 after cleaning everything properly. So I have my work cut out for me over the next few weeks, but it is getting there! I have 90% of parts now too. I also need to strip down the panels for painting which I will do probably next week sometime. In the meantime I am on the lookout for a bonnet, and possibly a tailgate. Some pleb welded gas struts to the underside of my bonnet and although it is perfect in every other way I removed on but it will need repairing with a plate and filler on the underside and I'm not sure I fancy the hassle for the sake of just finding a new bonnet!  :banghead:Let me know what you think.  :)

Cheers James!

I'm getting there, a load of bits have been sent off for powdercoating. Should have them by mid next week, then the car will/should be fully sprayed in two to three weeks and then the re-building begins!

I am collecting parts atm, today I managed to source a set of 100mm bolt on driveshaft flanges for my 02J box for £70, not as cheap as I would have liked but they are rare and I wasn't going to pay £54+VAT from TPS for them new.

I am trying to source a decent clutch setup, I am nervous about getting a VR6 + G60 setup off Techniclutch on eBay as they are the cheapest by far @ £225 but the amount of bad press they have is amazing! So I am looking at getting a VR6 clutch from GSF (Hopefully Sachs) and a second hand G60/ABF flywheel from eBay/breakers.

I have nearly everything else, I am going to try to twist my brothers arm to give me his interior before we sell his campaign. But we shall see! I also made the mistake as well of removing my driveshafts connected to my hubs and the bolts are so tight I can't get them off. So I will have to put them back on the car then loosen the nuts then remove and refurb the driveshafts and hubs! Very annoying because of all the extra labour but oh well! Although I just had an idea…..

Right, got the flanges all fitted, 100mm on 02J box now :)

Just bought a G60 single mass flywheel with matching ABF 2.0 Clutch off eBay for £62 posted. Not too bad, I will phone GSF in the morning to find out about a Sachs VR6 clutch kit to match.

I will get some pics up of the bits being refurbished tomorrow, but I am only doing a few bits myself as I wanted the majority two stage powder coated to protect them and so that the underside looks perfect.

More has happened, so more progress to report. Basically all major components have been dual stage powder coated, (pics are below) the shell and all panels are now 90% ready for paint, they will be finished off this weekend at my girlfriends Dad's training room booth :Dthe insides/backs of the panels will be sprayed body colour, (They are currently primed) then all the door shuts, inside and engine bay painted with base colour. This should be done by Sunday night. Then it will all be being brought back to the garage for the next two weeks to be re-built, the panels will all be hung and the engine will meet bay plus general re-building to the underside/inside will begin. At the end of those two weeks it will be taken back to the booth for all over external spray of base colour and lacquer.

Then the real fun begins, re-building the interior and designing all the looms, this will include a full CAT 1 alarm, Mk2 CE2 fusebox with a mix of Mk1 plugs and obviously the 20Vt engine bay looms, this should go together pretty quick though as I'm pretty handy with wires :DI have also ordered a few other custom bits which I will show you as I get. Found a new VR6 Sach's clutch kit for a good price which will take the power nicely. Then just need to order the intercooler, new driveshafts or CV joints, 280mm front brakes with adaptor brackets, bigger wheels to house the brakes, some mk4 clocks to hybridise with the mk1 dash an exhaust and down pipe and a remote brake servo. I'm sure theres more I have forgotten. I have also sent my ECU to be remapped and de-immobilised by my mate to get the engine going.

Then I am most likely going to break my brothers campaign, taking every part off it that I want and selling the rest or selling it without the bits I want on it and giving my brother some extra money. His interior is perfect though so would be a shame to pass it up. I am thinking of Porsche seats, but in the short term I just want to get the car going!

Pics of my refurbed bits:

Let me know what you think!  :)

Good progress Joe!

You'll be pleased to know I have made a bit of progress - interior is all out, bought a fuel pump & now scouting for a new fuel tank! The outlet came off with the feed to the fuel pump. Happy days.

See you soon.

haha cheers mate! I just keep telling myself that! There is a lot more stuff that hasn't been pictured yet, the engine for example I have stripped, painted/cleaned and re-built but no pics atm.

Being an auto electrician helps with the wiring… but still it is daunting, there is a lot of it! Where abouts in Northants are you?

I'm near Kettering mate.  Electrics in an old mk1…. I wouldn't even look at it no wonder you're rewiring… mine has more scotch locks and junctions than actual wires  8O

How long in total before she's finished do you think?

Scotch locks are my worst nightmare! I nearly hid as I read the name! haha if you ever want a hand/something wiring?/scotch lock eliminating, give us a PM. Good to meet another local with a similar interest who I don't bore with constant mk1 talk :) (The missus gets angry now haha)

As for the time to finish, who knows, my aim at the moment is to have her MOT'd by October 3rd. That's when I head back for my final year of Uni so really needs to be as done as possible by then, it will then turn into a long running project where I do bits as and when I can afford it. But I want to get it running and usable by then, which gives me just over 2 months. Not having a regular job (freelance product/graphic designer) is a bonus, and money I have saved from my student loans is good for funds! I'm not your typical drunkard student, I would rather have a nice car to be paying off for than a liver problem lol

That may seem slightly confusing given that I said I was an auto electrician, the job I had since I was 16 up until last september when I moved to Northants was as an auto electrician. I worked full time in my gap year for a company near where I used to live doing all sorts, alarm installs, loom builds, custom audio work, media installs etc. so until I have my degree at least I class myself as an auto electrician, I do still do a bit of mobile stuff when someone needs me though. :D
