After:
also bought from the states a Girling caliper rebuild kit which should hopefully stop my rattling brakes

Been told by numerous "older" car enthusiasts about the old engine oil and diesel thing supposed to be alright for cresoting fences too!!!! it stands to reason that it should work. stereo is looking fresh as well mate.

Just read this all through purely because it's a diesel! I admire the way you can get things clean with the newness refitted. I've not got skill or patience to do it.
Just a thought on your brake issue - you have the diaphragm vac pump which is notoriously bad. Perhaps you have very little servo assist?

thought i better update this thread
well stanford hall didn't go so well as i broke down on the M1
not good times
got it home and did a compression test and something wasn't right
so the engine came apart
cyclinder head off and on the bench
normal cracks inbetween the valves
and this crack around the injector housing
so after it sitting in peices for a few month while prparing for the AGM, now it's over the rebuild will begin

picking the cyclinder head up from the welders today as he has fixed the cracked injector seat
also big thanks to GSF Leicester for helping me source all the parts i needed. Finding piston rings for these deisels is a bit tricky unless you wanna pay £200+ from VW
so after my holiday this will be going back together

right then progress today
pistons all cleaned up ready for the new rings
new rings fitted
the bore before the honing
then after a quick hone almost as good as new
heres a bit of a problem
the top of the block looks like this
but then the gasket looks like this
seem theres a few holes missing in the gasket and they are also not as big as the holes in the block
what you rekon???
