Morning All!! Conveniently I ran into an old friend yesterday, an old friend with a car lift! :):)My first impression was good, a few spots I could see but nothing drastic or major needed. The only part that I can see that needs  immediate attention is the small hole on the floor pan. The exhaust has started rattling a lot so I reckon there's new hangers needed.
The car was under sealed in the past, my concern is that there could be rust underneath. There are some spots where there is rusty dots showing through. Im a rookie when it comes to body work so I really don't know if this is worthy of being worried or not.

Any advise massively appreciated!

Cheers,

Chris

That's a shame. Seeing the hole you have, I guess there will be more.

The only way to be sure would be to strip all of the underseal off the from the underside, repair and then repaint

NOOOOOOO….I was hoping you wouldn't say that!! So not much point patching up that little hole until I strip It all down? Was planning on not doing this until the winter, but now I may have to rethink my strategy :(  :(  :(

Sorry not wanting to scare you Chris!

I'm saying there's a likely hood you'll have more. That said, if you're under the car, just have a prod and poke around and you'll soon feel if there's anything else lurking. Have a look under the carpets too.

If this is the only hole you find then of course it's worth patching this one up. Any and all preventative measures are a bonus

Looking at your pictures it seems that the rust is under the underseal, it is best to get a wire brush and give it a good scrub underneath the car especially where the rust patches are.
You could just clean up around the hole, back to good bear metal and get a patch welded in, it may be a little hard to do as it's around the bar which runs under the car.
Are you currently using the car on the road? I would not drive it through this winter as it is at the moment as those other surface rust patches will only end up in a hole, if they are cleaned and treated with some type of rust converter then repainted in some thing like Rust busters "121 Epoxy Mastic" you may not need to do any more welding but just painting over it with underseal  like the pervious owner has may look OK for a little while but the rust will just keep eating away at the floor till more holes appear.

Ah don't worry its not scaring me , I think id prefer to know now if there's a winter on my back ahead! Iv had the carpet out and all seems fairly solid alright. I think I may just bite the bullet and strip it down just to see. Best case scenario, its the only hole and will be a nice straight forward job, and then ill have a nice newly undersealed car

I only drive the car a couple of times a week, and only in the dry! Do you think it would be safe enough to leave until the winter before stripping off the underseal or is it not worth the risk. Obviously ill do a temp patch up on the hole until then?
When I do strip it all off, ill repair any damage underneath and weld in whatever needs doing. When you say the rust treatment/paint may just cover up the rust for the short term, do you reckon the rust treatment is worth doing or should anything remotely rusty be cut out and replaced?

Sorry for the rookie questions!!

Give it a good clean down and put a good rust preventing paint like por 15 on it and over coat with a good stone chip like dinatrol

Do you reckon that would last? After reading a bit into peoples experiences with it, I don't want to have to de-underseal again in a couple of years :P

That's interesting alight. Hopefully when I get the underseal off there isn't too many holes. Iv never even picked up a welder. But plan on learning and doing it all myself.

Little update!!

Fitted a single-light grill and new red trim that arrived on my desk this morning from Mark at Classic-VW, really good quality and totally cleans up the front end!
Delighted to get it fitted before my bringing her along to the Limerick car show on Sunday.

Excuse the the cable ties, snapped a clip on the badge so needed it to set a bit of sticky stuff until I can get a replacment.

Now I somehow need to give it a good clean between getting home from the UK at 10pm tomorrow, and leaving for Limerick at 7am Sunday!

Between driving a 1998 Saab from Dublin to Rimini, via the Alps/ Stelvio Pass, and repaving my driveway –  the poor golf has been neglected recently. I have done nothing except drive the golf!

I brought it to my first show last Sunday. I was very surprised with the amount of complements the car got. I got speaking to lots of people with Mk1’s in various states of repair, and people stockpiling parts which I was very happy about! J
A couple of pics from the day…

After I found a couple of lads in my garden having a good look around the golf, I decided the security of the car needed some work. I used the excuse of repaving the driveway as a way to hide it a little better.

Temp home while the garden gets dug up!

Spot the golf  ;)

I will put in a ram bar at the front but Im happy enough with how it turned out. Now the car cant be seen unless your actually in the garden… and hopefully if you get that far in the dogs will get you!

I picked up some new Calipers, Discs, Pads and fluid, so that’s on my To Do list for next weekend. First time I have ever attempted changing calipers and discs – but we all have to start somewhere!!
