Great news Rich, nice one!!

I hadn't thought of the leads - I did that when I replaced the head gasket on my sons old Corsa. It's often the simple things that you miss

Another big step forward in getting it on the road then

Glad its running. Think if it was mine and cambelt was 30 years old I'd get that changed ASAP without running engine anymore.

Good news. This is an interesting thread, we don't get many having been sat for ages and then recommissioned.

Ross came over last week and replaced the cambelt, tuned it up and it now ticks over fine and starts up first time.  The exhaust down pipe was split, so another ordered and to be fitted on Monday (hope the studs don't break), along with new discs (still on originals at 97k), pads, coolant hoses and the coolant flush and brake fluid.

I changed the oil & filter yesterday and new wiper blades - so should be ready for MOT soon.  Seeing as nothing major has gone (yet!) I decided to change the wheels since the tyres are pretty shot being 20yrs old, and the P. Wheels will go up the loft for another 10 yrs.

Managed to get some BBS RZ's locally on eBay.  They are a bit scruffy, thought they would clean up ok but I really need to give them a refurb. I have started on the worst one today - god theses wheels are fiddly to work on!

Another reason for buying them cheap, is that I was not sure if they would fit, as they are 15x7 but with et of 24, being ex-BMW 318iS.  Just out them on one side this morning and they seem okay, just that I won't really know until car has passed MOT and I can drive it at more than 5mph down our cul-de-sac.  Tyres are 195/45  so that helps a bit.

anyway here are some pics, don't look too bad from a few feet away.

From that distance the wheels look great

Do they just need a clean up?

BBS crossspokes are about the best non standard wheels for a Mk1 but seems a bit strange not to keep the P-Slots on such an original car?

I'd get the nuts/studs red hot with a blow torch. When I got my GTI one stud was already sheared and then I did another…..

I know, but I have never really liked them that much. For quite a few years it ran on 14" RZ's . The P-slots have done about 150k, been on about six different cars and are ready for a refurb to be honest. As I am not doing the concours scene anymore I thought I would prefer to have a set that I liked looking at.

There's not much corrosion on them, but have at some time been painted very poorly and are quite kerbed. Just finished one of them and don't look too bad. I will get some new badges if they run ok and going to keep them.

This is the finished result -by far the worst wheel of the lot to start with.

All the jobs done today apart from the dreaded exhaust down pipe.  Two out of the first three studs snapped despite plenty of oil and heat.  Rest looked just as difficult so plan B , just sourced a used Six stud Manifold of eBay.  Nice to have some brakes now though.

Everyone slags off the later 'toilet bowl' exhaust fannimold design but at least its not got any studs to shear off.

They are relatively easy to drill out and re-tap when the manifold is off the car. I replaced with stainless steel studs

Just waiting to get the replacement manifold fitted on Monday, so taking advantage of the nice weather thought I would get the original paint back to its factory fresh condition,.  Some light correction with my Machine Polisher, a coat of glaze (PB White Diamond) topped off with some Collinite 845 wax. Raceglaze rubber dressing bought the bumpers back to new, and a coat of Autoglymn SRP. For the alloys I refurbed last week.

A good Hoover out was all the inside needed, the drivers seat having spent much of its time when in daily use with a seat cover on, clearly showed the benefits.   MOT. not far away now……
