failed,! first time ever.
Lower front ball joint, so an easy fix, but HC emissions were also well over at 1450ppm - seems to be over fuelling.
Not sure what that can be yet, had been standing since October and as tax had run out only drove 2 miles to garage.
Will try cleaning out metering head and flap in case gummed up a bit and then give it some welly when taking it back at easter to see if that fixes it.

Decided to spend sometime under the car today checking all the waxoyl I had recoated a couple of years ago for any dry spots. Found very little to be honest, but gave a few areas an extra coat.
I have previously tried to spray some under the wheel arch trims, without removing them, but this time I decided to be really brave with the rear passenger side one. There has for years been signs of a little rust bubbling under the bottom edge of the trim, but always being too scared to remove them to see the horrors which lurked below.
Well today in a fit of madness I decided to remove the trim, the screws came out quite easily and to my suprise underneath whilst dirty was almost rust free as you can see apart from a little surface rust where the edge of the trim had rubbed on the paint.
Now just in process of touching up the paint, then going to give some thick coats of waxoyl and leave it alone for another 33 years!

Not bad for 33 years! Interesting to see that the stripes go under the arches too, will remember that if I ever get to that point with mine! I guess the other sticker lower down is just to stop the arch rubbing?

Yes that bottom sticker is a bit random, I assumed as you say to stop any paint rub, it might have been double sided tape but difficult to say as it has been covered in dirt for so long. It was suprise get seeing that they were such a tight fit all the dirt packed inside the bottom 1/4 of the trim - over a mug full fell out.

Wow Richard both looking absolutely fantastic my friend!
Of course the Mk 7.5 GTI just steals my hart because it's white and 5 doors (very practical as we all get a little older).
Yes I have to admit it I am officially jealous as _ _ _ _ (please think of a swear word beginning with F and ending with K)
Hope you and your family have a great summer whichever you choose to drive!

In 35 years of having cars I have never had to use Tar remover, since I have had the GTE I have had to buy 5 litres of the stuff

Such a lovely Mk1, must be a seriously good shell if those arches have stayed in such good condition under the trims from new. Seeing it coming out again for summer makes me very jealous, I wish mine was finished & back on the road. The white one is nice, but I'd have the Mk1 any day.

Thanks, there is no sign of any rust underneath, I thought that there was some bubbling underneath but turned out to be factory under seal applied in a lump! I put it down to 25 litres of Waxoyl over the years, it's so sticky underneath and lack of winter use/ warm dry garage for 20 yrs
