Access is much better without the rear panel on plus rear corners were so rotten (esp offside) that had no real reference for welding chassis leg back on.
and yes, I will tidy!

All welded from inside the car where I had slotted the boot floor flange. Not quite finished yet - some more welds to do at top corners and sides from inside the car. Have burnt a couple of holes in the car in the top corners - I knew the metal was thin there but not careful enough
Anyway, I'm really chuffed with the result and couldn't resist sticking the lights in for a quick look 8)
Hope to finish off tomorrow - at last the car looks like I've made some progress on it
(Still need to tidy under the car  )

I bought some time ago off ebay two genuine VW chassis legs, started tackling the NSR one today having removed the old one ages ago.
Looking at the cross member in front of the wheel well, thought this would be a nightmare to detach the end without messing it up in order to get the chassis leg in as once piece so decided to split it in two.
Here's a couple of pics of the leg in place after loads of fettling - and still loads more to do. Despite being VW (the quality is excellent) the fit isn't perfect.
You can see in this pic I've made two tabs out of the end of what's left of the original chassis leg so I can fold these over the new one and weld for extra strength at the join, hope it works!
When I've finished the fettling I'll zinc prime the whole area. The previous owner of the chassis legs kindly painted the insides with some black POR type stuff and seam sealed so they should last. He had drilled the flanges too, I guess for plug welding but the holes are too small so I'll slot these out.
One question, the end of the chassis leg where it should meet the rear panel has no flange. I need to bend this down to meet the rear panel but should the two be welded together? I'm not certain
Thought I'd get this all done today, but spend bloody ages trying to get my regulator in my new gas bottle ready for welding but it kept leaking. Looking inside there's hairline cracks where the regulator sits in the bottle neck so I'll be back to BOC tomorrow! My plans were therefore scuppered!!
Anyway, it felt good (although a little cold and achy) to get back under the Golf, determined to keep up the progress now

I think the flanges are definately spot welded mate. I have just checked mine as haven't pulled the rest of the rear panel off yet.
