Cheers Yomp

It is quite pitted Paul - will see what occurs next weekend but get the feeling I'll be chopping some of it out

Nice work :D  Taking underseal off is a real bore at any rate, but have you tried a heat gun? I've found that coupled with a chisel makes light work of it, even on stone chip, seam sealer, paint, everything! Then use your wire wheel to brush off the clingy bits

Another point about wire brushing pitted metal is it only removes the loose rust, the only way to get down to good metal is with the grinder. having said that I think a splash of rust eater after a wire brushing is as good as anything.

Ratchet - how much to hire the welder? Will it be as cheap to buy a mig? And will a spot welder do all the repairs you need?

Cheers
Andy

Been quoted ?30 for one day, ?45 for two or ?65 for a week. Probably have to leave a hefty deposit too. That's just from checking HSS and the like.

It won't do all my repairs, no - but it will do the rear panel and sills better than I could with a mig.

Only spent a couple of hours on it this pm. Bought a heat gun which has made getting the underseal off much easier!

Decided to bite the bullet and remove the chassis leg on the near side. Haven't finished tho…

Glad I did, metal underneath looks solid but I don't think the leg itself was too tidy. Is a real pain to remove but hope to have finished tomorrow. Cut off the exhaust hanger/hook and kept to weld to new panel but will be checking with VW first if you can still buy. I checked on ETKA and it does have its own part number. (Can hope anyway!)

Not sure if will get rear panel on or not tomorrow though, not too much free time!

looks like good metal left now.

looking like your progressing well with it.  when i did my rear panel i used a couple of rivets to hold it in place when your checking the gaps etc before welding.  then just drilled them out and welded the holes back up after.  found it was easier than trying to balance it if you don't have any helpers.
there is probably a better way of doing it but that was all i had to hand.
you doing a cracking job so far. keep it up.

Sounds like a good method Tom. I don't have a rivet gun but hopefully have enough welding clamps?? :dontknow:  We'll see! :D

Just want to get the car sorted now so pushing on as quick as poss. Feel like when I have the rear end done, that will be the worst of it - we'll see!

Good to see you're getting there Andy :y: . Did you say you've got to do sunroof repairs? I've just completed that area, got tons of pics to wade through, but will try and update my thread soon.

Ok, so checked with VW and no surprise, the exhaust hanger on the rear of the NS chassis leg is obsolete - since 1996 I think he said!! Mine is well rusty and I can clean up but has anyone got one off a sheel they're scrapping which is in good nick?

Been a few weeks since been on the Golf but got a few hours in this pm.

Got as much of the NSR chassis leg off that I wanted to.

…in readiness for the rear panel 8)

^^^^^^^^^^I really should tidy up under the car now!!^^^^^^^^^^

It's only trial fitted at moment - I ran out of time and have some further 'fettling' to do but next time should be on and finished - can then do rear chassis legs and work around the arches, sills and then that's rear end done!

Sounds quick and easy but know if wont be - oh and filler neck panel repair…..
