AT LAST! Hairys Resto!!
Andy, if possible get a big bottle, lasts so much longer. Machine Mart do reg kit for around ?29. Your reg number is a Glasgow plate, supplying dealers would have been Ian Skelly in Rutherglen or Arnold Clark, Crow road or Kilmarnock road. Good luck mate

I do have a reg, just no gauge. I just turned gas up until I could hear a faint hiss. Anyway, will the the BOC one tomorrow and buying a decent reg off them too.
Ref the dealer Cero, it was Ian Skelly, on 17/10/1983. Surprisingly, it was sold to a chap in Castle Donnington!

Just read your thread from start to finish. Brings back memories of when I started on my Y plate (which is now in the garage as a donor car) and my latest project which is also a mars red A plate with a SHS reg plate.
As with the gas problem. I wouldn't bother wasting your money on Argon (although it does give you a cleaner weld). Get your self a pub gas bottle and use pub gas. I get mine filled for a tenner and there is no rental for the bottle. I bought my regulator off fleabay for about ?25 then got myself some extra clear tubing from Homebase to couple everything together.. Job Done.
Keep up the good work.
I aint been near mine for about 6 weeks as I have had to have a Hernia op. However I have managed to rent a good garage across the road and have now moved the car off my driveway into the garage. Should be good to get in about it sometime next week.

First Golf, lots of work. I've started so I'll finish!

Macca have you welded with Argoshield Lite? I've used it most of the time, did a little bit (2 disposable bottles) with CO2, and I prefer the proper stuff.

Well, I have started my 3 day weldathon! :cheer: (Well, 2.5 really, didn't start til about 12!)
Finished off the MIG trolley - good chance to improve my welding technique!
..then tried to finish off the OSR beam mount repair. OMG the repair panel is just so rubbish! Taken much longer than planned and at one point I just wanted to beat the crap out of it with a lump hammer! However, I persevered and…
Still not finished, got some other patching and tidying up to do in the area but hope can finish that tomorrow and move on!
It's damn nice to get some sort of progress again and have a proper bottle of gas now! 8)

I think the camera lies!! Nah, it's not too bad, just not happy with the panel. Got a bit of messing around to do to patch and tidy up but it should be strong. Just good to get some metal back on the car at last.

Well, day two of my weldathon hasn't gone too bad
Didn't know where to start at first as rear end of OS sill such a mess but cracked on in the end repairing the inner. Looks a bit messy right now but need to do some 'trimming!' I'll do this when I put the outer on.
These two repair patches I made ages ago - before Christmas. Long story short, I did it in two patches, not one. Used one of these handy little clamp things from Frosts
..to help get a pretty good butt weld where the two joined - well worth buying if you don't already have them :y:
Got this all looking pretty tidy in the end. Spent the last hour or so of today attacking the beam mount repair again. I'm not 100% happy with it - realised there must be 4-5mm clearance between the repair panel and the section which the studs mount on. I've now cut off this portion of the repair and will weld back on in correct place - it's a bit mashed now - may end up making my own panel but we'll see
Third and final day of weldathon tomorrow (day off work :cheer: ) Hope to get this whole area finished and rust primed and maybe even move on to the rear chassis leg. Will update tomorrow
Cheers
