Help! Whats it worth??

Hi All.

So here is my problem. My Dad has owned the Golf since 1982 but is no longer driving so he has asked me to help him with the clear out (3 cars and 2 motorbikes at 84 year old!!). I am having real difficulties valuing the Golf it as it seems to be an interesting example and I can't find anything to compare it with.

Here is a brief rundown of what I have been told:
The car is a 1980 model and was originally left hand drive. It was imported by V.A.G Ltd in London and converted the right hand drive to use as a demonstrator.
V.A.G Ltd wanted a 5 speed gearbox model and right hand drive ones were not available at that time. They fitted the 4 headlamp system and also the ATS Teledial wheels which gave a slightly wider track. The work took some time so the car was not registered in the UK until 16th April 1981.
Specification
  • 4 headlamp system
  • ATS Teledial wheels
  • Rear spoiler
  • Rear seat belts
  • Recent new Pioneer radio
Notes
  • 70,000 miles only with all MOT's
  • Last owner (my Dad) has owned it since 1982
  • Very comprehensive history file
  • Very good tyres all around
  • Very clean engine bay
  • Very clean and tidy interior
Current Issues
  • The rev counter does not work
  • Very small dent in tail gate
  • Paintwork in boot area untidy
  • The sunroof is sealed shut
The car is in very good order and has never been restored. I drove it this week for the first time since my Dad taught me to drive in it in 1984! It still goes really well and was just as much fun as I remembered. I will get a fresh MOT next week so my question is what is it worth in the real world? It is not a concourse car by any means but for a 34 year old car it is quite exceptional.

All suggestions on value and where best to sell it will be gratefully received.

Stuart.

It  definitely sounds like it will get a lot of  interest and  no problem  selling it.
Prices  really seem to  range from  reasonable to  ridiculous
I guess the  auction  route will show the  value.

Is eBay the most popular site for early Golfs or are there any classic car specialist ones. Or do I take it to an old school auction?

Ebay is  probably the most popular,  but  take  into  account they  charge a % of the  final  selling fee.  And also you can get a  few  time wasters.

The car is currently in Surrey but will be coming back to my home in Essex when we put it up for sale. The sun roof is an after market one made by Britax. The interior is very good. The front seat were re-covered in original material a couple of years ago just because there was some wear to the drivers bolster and now look like new. I have no more photos at present but will post them as soon as I do.
So the 1st suggested price is around 7K. What does everyone else think??

Put it on the for sale section on here - you will get fair money for it and you know it'll be looked after properly

Stuart this is definitely an interesting car.

With the imported side of things, with V.A.G paperwork to show, it makes it different from other that come onto the market.

If this was available a few months before I bough my tintop I definitely would have been interested.

It seems Mk1 Golf value is constantly rising at the mo, I don't think 7K is a bad shout really as a first suggestion you have received.

I think the for sale rules on here state you need to say a price, so u could list for more then / offers?

Seriously interested people with contact you.

If it was mine I would pay to get it detailed, shoot in somewhere nice or in a white booth if you can, then write a nice detailed advert on ebay, put in on auction and put a reserve you are happy with on it.

Through interest what's the other 2 cars you have to clear out, anything interesting ?

Good luck with sale.
