Every little bit helps mate. Coming along now. Hope you don't find too many more gremlins along the way :)

Cheers bud, pretty much finished on the outside, so hopefully nothing more to find.. Although i've seen the rust that was lurking behind the underseal on Melteddrummer's so who knows lol… The inside hasn't been worked on, just sprayed (poorly), so i'm pretty sure thats good, taking the sound deadening off under the seats on the inside though to make sure there's nothing lurking under there..

I  spent some more time on it yesturday (booked a few days off) but stopped at about 2pm. Thought i'd cary on today, but the weather  seems to have turned on me!!

Wish you were closer! Don't fancy a road trip lol :D

Total discrase on the bodywork, I mean to just fill over a big hole, thats really poor! Really taking my time to pick the right guy for the job this time!!

Can't wait either, only been 3 years since I bought it back from my mate!!

Cheers for the offer on the Kit, I have however decided not to put the Kit back on, too scared that the water will get trapped and rust my arches again.. just can't risk it lol.. as it happens I just sold both of my BBS kits I had this week!

So onto yesturdays work…..

When removing paint, i've tried my best not to go past the factory protective coating on the panels…

What i've noticed is that where the metal has been ground down past this coating (as seen on the 1st pic) the filler seems to pull away much easier.  If you look at the two pics below you can see 4 welding spots (not sure why, crappy numberplate screws I guess…) anyway whilst running the heat gun over the rear panel these 4 areas cracked right open, before any movement from the rest of the filler.

Anyone got any views on this, and what I can do to prevent it?

Also removed the wiring loom to get started on the inside of the car!!

Going down to see "Andy the paint" at Spikes vintage restorations http://www.spikesvintagerestorations.com/ at his open day on the 28th!

Seen some of his work, and he also did the Camper van that took me to my wedding.

Check out some of his work! Amazing stuff and the guy has nothing but time for me when I speak to him!

Not going to be cheap, and now he's REALLY seen whats to be done, I know it'll be more than what I want to hear, but I know it'll be worth it.

Originally wanted a few guys from round here to do it but fed up of chasing! Ringing/emailing all the time and never hearing back. Can't seem to give my money away lol.

Hense why i'm going to Spike's, someone who despite being in demand, seems to want to help as much as he can!

Just read your full thread, hats off to you for your determination and top work.

Gutted for you with the first paint job, must have been so depressing! But at least you've jumped straight back in the saddle and carried on.

Think the new paint place is the right place for you, so many amazing looking cars there.

Best of luck with the restoration.

Cheers, sometimes it's worth just biting the bullet and paying to get it done right lol. Tried to do it the cheap way and didn't like it lol.

Cheers Matt, Thanks for the encouragement, surprised you had the time to read all that lol… It must be one of the slowest, yet longest build threads on this forum

Once it's in paint, it'll be full steam ahead lol!

Yeah, these restorations seem to take forever, been struggling for motivation to get on with mine recently, but I've had nothing even close to the problems you've had, so a good kick up the behind for me

Looking forward to seeing yours in paint, again!

Lol, i'm a bit like you, I see the likes of Andy (Melteddrummer), who are re-welding the entire car back together in just a few month and think FFS surely I should have mine done by now!!

Got a build thread for yours?

Yeah, meltdrummer, smudger and many others are truly flying the mk1 restoration flag, turning out inspirational cars, keeps me going knowing one day ill be at the same stage as them

I've got a build thread, search for shellby, just haven't done enough to post an update recently. Hopefully have something decent to discuss with everyone by the end of September!

Have you decided to use Spike to paint yours?

Just searching for your thread now :)

I haven't decided 100% as it depends what price he quotes me when I see him on the 28th, got a quote for a respray, but there's a bit more work to do. Although I have done a LOT of work myself, as you can see. So hopefully that will go in my favour, gotta be a good few hundred quid+ saved just sanding down the engine bay myself.

I've been selling all my leftover mk1 bits (wings, bodykits, bonnet etc) and raised another £500 towards it.

I hope so is probably the best answer, unless I find someone better closer.. But it's unlikely judging by his work :)

That £500 will definately help, and all the work you've done

Unfortunately car spray ain't cheap  :'(

Once it is sprayed though, that should be it for a good few years. When it is done, you will be sat inside watching tv and you will have to get up to go and just look at it. You will have a nice warm feeling inside knowing that you got it looking like that with your hard work. It will be hard to believe that that is your car sat in front of your house. I cant wait to covoy to shows with you and tristan!

Should be good for more than a few years lol! Once it's done I'll park it in my conservatory and sit in it to watch TV! Convoying to shows will be the icing on the cake can't wait.

Got a quote from a guy local to me after getting some really good recomendations, for the following:

Sandblasted inside, out and underneath, new underseal everywhere, welding on rear arches, rear panel and scuttle, adding new roof skin and then paint inside, out and engine bay.. Cheap at a mear…..

……..5 Thousand pound!  :'(. Would have been nice as it's local, but even for the Golf that's very much more than I could have imagined, considering almost all the place I've been to were looking at £1800-2000 for painting and i'd expect thats it's not got anywhere near 3k worth of welding to be done..

Hopefully i've not set my heart on Spike's only to find that he want's something similar.. I fear it may be tho based on his work!

For that price i'd happilly put Melteddrummer up in a hotel for a week!

Hey, I'll stay in a hotel for a week for £5000, no problem at all   :ocf_emoticons__lmao:

Seriously though, £5000 is probably not that far away for a good job. I'm still looking at £3000+ at the painters I'm using, even after all the work I've done myself :o

Got told my car wasn't worth saving tody!!

What do you guys think? P.s just fishing really, as I know the answer already :D

One thing i've been up against is getting quotes for the Paintwork, I got a load of quotes for around 1.8k to 2k for paint when he car was fully painted already (poorly as you all know), most of the shops said I'd need to sand it right back to metal to make sure none of the bad paint ends up under the new paint… So I start sanding it down, and now people want like 4-5K!! WTH I've just saved you like a weeks worth of sanding down, it's all been done properyl and the car hasn't got any worse!!!

Still waiting on a full quote from Spike, who I mentioned earlier in the thread.

Well, I think that's jus BS, your car is definitely worth saving mate. Other than a small hole in the scuttle area I didn't see much else in that video.

If I was you I'd take it to Spikes, I know he'll be more expensive but his work looks very good.

See my project thread for a far worse shell dragged back from the brink!

It may seem like a lot of money but like most things you tend to get what you pay for and it's the man hours that is the costly part.
For reference all my materials to paint my car (primer, lacquer, mars red paint, sanding discs, seam sealer, lead stickers, filler) the lot came to about 1k. Budget approx £30 an hour for labour and ask them how long it will take them to complete - This is just a very rough guide
