Mid life crisis?
Nah it was going to happen sooner or later!
It just got later, and later and later!

Looks great, has it been restored recently? Nice to see a black car with the proper waistline stripe in place as well.
It looks like it's riding a bit high from the picture though?

I believe it was restored around 5 or 6 years ago but have little information.
It's all standard as far as I am aware.
I agree with your comment that it looks a little high. This is something that I will look into resolving.

If the car has had the springs replaced they might not be Gti springs which are lower than stock springs…
30mm drop is a nice look and ride for a Mk1. Eibach springs Bilstein shocks are a good kit to get.
What are you plans for the car?

Not decided yet to be honest. Just getting used to having one.
May change the original wheels for some larger BBS rims.
There's the height as pointed out, so that could be the first thing that needs to be looked at.
As for anything else, looking to stay pretty stock.

RE: the ride height, think we are confusing 40 years ago with fat balloon tyres and vaguely comfortable suspension with modern 18+ inch rubberband low profile wheel/tyres and suspension setup for world record attempts on the Nordschleife .
If you look at period press release photos they all look ridiculously under wheel/tyred;

And after a year or two the springs and top mount will have settled down losing 20-30mm (if they are brand new now)

Welcome from a fellow newbie too!
Really nice example of a GTI there, are you thinking of keeping the two front headlights or down to one each side with a badge less grill?

I am going to keep the grill as it is for now, keeping the spotlights and badge.
