1985 Mk1 Golf Gti Cabrio or 1990 Golf Clipper Cabrio??

Looking to buy a Mk1 Golf Cabrio, what are the pros and cons to owning the Gti or a standard 1600?

Have two in mind both with history and good condition with similar price tags, will be doing all the servicing and maintenance myself where possible

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi and welcome!

I guess you'll be looking at an 1800 carb, not 1600? In any case it in part down to personal preference on what you want out of the car.

For me its GTI always. There's just something about the engine, the way it sounds and performs but an 1800 clipper/carb can be a good car. The Pieburg carbs are known to give problems but can be ok, a lot of them have been changed to Webers.

Check out the cabriolet buyers guide on the home page, that's a good help.

Ultimately the most important part will be go for the most solid body you can find as mechanicals are cheap and easy to fix generally speaking.

Good luck with the search and keep us posted. Let us know too when/where you're viewing a car as there may be someone free in the area to join you for an unbiased view

Cheers for the links

The white 85 one looks quite tidy. The interior has been re-trimmed but the roof looks like it needs replacing. It's hard to see from the pics but it looks like there's bubbles of rust lurking at the edges of some of the trim. Based on that if my assumptions are correct it's pricey!

The clipper does look really tidy. Although it's had a new roof - and it looks new - the roof side tension cables need doing as the line of the roof sits high above the top of the windows.

Out of the two it's the blue clipper I'd be looking at

I don't want to slam a car without viewing it but don't think it will turn out to be worth anything over £2k, but you never know until you have a look

presume the blue clipper is asking a realistic price?

For a trade price it's not too bad. You'll pay a bit more but hopefully for some peace of mind. It's certainly worth a look

thesmileyman1973 I've seen this car in the flesh and can vouch for the fact it is incredibly tidy. £2k would be a bargain in my opinion
