After a few years away from Mk1's, I've come back to wanting one again, love that boxy little shape, and I'm still in the "hairdresser" mode so want the convertible.

Well good for you, you know it makes sense.
And a Convertible,  a clear cut decision that one!

So I brought the one I saw on Ebay, it's a 1985 Golf Gti convertible in light blue.  Has had lots of work done to it recently - gearbox, clutch, a bit of engine work etc, a new hood a couple of years ago.  Looks to be quite an honest 30 year old VW - can't wait.  Collecting it on Saturday and she was a reasonable £ 1700

Sounds nice and good choice with summer coming soon.
Great fun Cabbies are, love my Rivage.
Get a project thread up in the projects section so we can see what you're up too.
Welcome back to the fold lol.

I'm picking up 'Gina' tomorrow.  Insured for £ 102 on a classic policy for 5k miles.  Been supersizing the photo's on e-bay .. ( 291364623001 if you want a sneaky look ).  My plans are too de-clipper it, I don't think an '85 would have come with that kit ?  I've put out feelers at a local trimmer to have the seats recovered although they don't need it.  I'm going to resist the urge to turn it into a 16v car or do anything too "unoriginal" to it.  Although I have a set of ATS cups in the garage, and a gearbox console with three gauges …..  Old VW's - you can spend a fortune !!

Oh yeah I remember seeing that on ebay. Didn't look a bad car at all, bar that one rust patch.

Look forward to your updates ;)

So we got home fine, even after getting stuck in a traffic jam for over half an hour, so the cooling system works really well !  A couple of minor niggles, there is an exhaust blow, sounds quite high up, so suspect exhaust manifold itself, the "dodgy" door handle is actually knackered and there's a lot of trim rattles.  So all in all, nothing too serious, a couple of weekends of tinkering maybe !  Had a quick look for a stainless steel four branch manifold, but no joy so far, although not looked too hard tbh !!  I think an engine mount might be worn as there's a lot of vibration on tick over …
