New owner of vw golf clipper!

Post

Hi
just got myself a G Reg clipper! It's a beast :) I have 3 keys all very similar to the ignition keys but none of them will open the fuel tank!! It's nearly empty and I need to drive it! Is there a different key I need or a new fuel cap?

Thanks

I know the Mk1 tin top cars all had separate keys for fuel cap so would presume that same case for later Cabbys.  Do all the three keys you have work the ignition and all the boot/door locks - if not the one that doesn't might be your fuel cap but just not easy to get in the lock, mines quite tricky.

Just thought but excuse for stating obvious, but if you don't have a key, it is unusual, so is the fuel cap actually locked, as they are usually quite stiff to undo?

Thanks for your reply

One does the ignition, one does the door and one the boot! I've tried them all, they key just won't fit! It looks like it should be a flat key, there's no jaggered edge on it

Usually a small flat key as opposed to the normal VW Key.

The key is inserted and turned whilst you hold the cap from spinning once the key is turned the cap is twisted off.

Plus I'd look at getting the locks re tumbled to match the ignition key that way one key fits all. There a guide on here for re keying your locks. But you'll need the dowels, so a bit of asking about may be needed.

Welcome to the Club first and for most Amy!  :)
The key to the petrol cap is the small chrome one pictured above.

As Chortle said, you need to get all your locks on one key and not to have to mess around with three just to get in and start the darn thing.

Then you should have the petrol cap key and a steering Anti theft device key, all together the keys alone will weigh more than your handbag does now if you don't get that sorted out!

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi Amy,

Welcome to the club, as Chortle has said the cap keys are usually small, flat and silver. Maybe the previous owner forgot to give this to you, have you looked in the door pockets, ashtray and glove box in case they kept the key in there ?  Just a guess !

Thanks for all the responses! Will put some pics up soon! The guy sold it to me on behalf of someone else and doesn't have a key. I popped to the local garage and he may have one,

He's also storing it until I get an alarm on,he said there's some dodgy folk around north Wales!!

Cheers :)
