Hi,

I'm based in Barnstaple where I work with as a vehicle mechanic. I'm looking for an old school car but undecided between a mk1, mk2 or even a 205 gti.

I've always loved older golfs and my brother had a mk2 and mk1 growing up. My ideal project would have minimal rust but be compete. I know of a shell for sale but by the time I add, suspension, brakes and other trim it may not be worth it.

HI mate,

Welcome along to the forum. Nice choice to have car wise. I have had a 205gti and loved it but I prefer the MK1's personally.

What sort of budget have you got??

At the moment as cheap as possible for the shell as i plan on rebuilding it over time. As a bench mark a complete but non mot, non tax and non running 205 went for 200 on the owners club but I was too late. Obviously mk1 gtis are gonna be more expensive and a lot more rusty. Willing to wait for the right car
to turn up though!

I think if I went with a golf it would have to be a mk1. If the shell is stripped then I would concentrate on running gear and exterior while the inside could wait. The project is about me learning body repair and prep for paint really.

What do you prefer about the mk1?

Nice purchase mate. Bargain price too :)

Prefer the MK1 to the 205 for quite a few reasons not least the feeling it gives you when driving and the admiring glances and waves you get all the time :)

205's are passing from bangerdom into Classic status at the moment. Its 30 years since they were launched and even the high-brow classic mags have started to concentrate on them.

Watson's yellow MK1 was in an article with a 205 in Practical Classics a while back too.

I am old, I had a 205XLD when they were new in the late 80's.  :o

I'd be interested in getting another Diesel or a 1.6 GTI or a CTI Cabrio while they are still around a sensible prices. At least they are available/affordable compared to similar condition MK1s.

1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Cheers again for the welcome.

I'd be interested if anyone in the local area has done a 20vt mk1. One of my superiors in work has a mk2 with a BAM engine and car on roof, bonnet and boot. Not yet seen it.

Thanks. I've not yet bought a car but am on the look out. I have a motorbike that I need to sell first before I can consider a car again.

Nice one! If you need any help at weekends let me know. I'm a truck mechanic at Chivenor so I can be a bit heavy handed sometimes! Would like to see it anyway!

we found a mk1 golf 1.3 driver stood for 2 years, knocked on the door and the guy sold it for £100. it started first time with jump leads ;)

if you wanna come to bristol i know of a J plate MK2 GTI 16v, A reg MK2 Driver, All white gti mk1 cabby and a clipper cabby rusted to hell all parked up on drives in and around bristol ;)

I know what you mean. There's a mk2 16v near where I walk the dog and I've took to going past and seeing if its moved.

There is a red 205 outside my mams but they didn't want to sell.

Also a friend is selling a mk1 abf but its already had work done and a 5 door.

I'm in Barnstaple too….. With a rather fetching mk1 Cabrio in a proper 80's colour combo!
