G'day from Australia

Hi there, I've long been a fan of the Mk1, and the GTI especially. I've owned a Mk4 GTI (1.8T) and my wife currently drives a Mk5 GTI. Tomorrow, my Mk1 GTI ownership experience begins.

I've a lot to learn, but am pretty keen to get my new Mk1 into even better condition than it is already in.

Pics tomorrow after I get home.

 :D

Cheers
Liam

Yep. If you read VWW a bit, then you will know the car.

Home safely. It's been a very long time since I've driven an old car, haha. Once the culture shock has worn off, though, the Mk1 is a lot of fun.

Jim, if you click on his link there's a forum down under covering VAG watercooled with the Mk1 having it's own section. There are some lovely cars on there.

Yes, a lot of work has been done, thankfully. I'm a bit of a n00b when it comes to this sort of stuff, but willing to learn. I change the oil in our Mk5 at half service intervals, but that's about my limit at this stage, haha.

A bit more on the car, it comes with well documented history. From the paperwork it looks like it is a March 1980 build. It appears as though it may have been a one owner car in the UK. It was brought out to Australia in late 1995 and sold to a new owner in early 1996. He owned it for 12 years (had it parked for about 8 of those years, apparently). The immediate past owner (Matt) picked it up in May 2007 and resprayed the car, tidied up the engine up the engine and now it is in my hot little hands.

I have MOT certificates for every year but one from 1984-1996 (missing the 1992 paperwork). Which is pretty cool. The original reg was FDL 588V (so maybe someone can confirm what year that would be?).

 :D

In answer to mk1jim's question, no there's not a lot of Mk1 GTIs in my area for the simple reason there's probably only 15-20 in Australia. We had Mk1s down under (and you do see a few around), they were even built in Australia for a while, but the first GTIs officially sold here were watered down Mk2s.

Funnily enough, I was looking at purchasing a 1984 (IIRC) Campaign that was here in Canberra also, but she was a bit rusty and I was conscious of getting in over my head. As it is I prefer the S1s, so it's all worked out well in the end.

Oh, I have a few questions about some of the finer points of the car, should I ask them here, or elsewhere?

Cheers
Liam

Liam, there's sections for every part of a Mk1 on here to ask questions whether it's electrics, body, engine etc etc etc. Post any questions you have or use the search facility, have a mooch round the site. Also you'll be able to pick up parts in the wanted section at non rip off ebay prices. Parcels to Oz upto 2kg about ?25 postage with Royal Mail.

Thanks mate. I already have my eye on some doorcards so that I can remove the speakers and return to original condition.

Postage will probably be more than the parts.
