Oil change and now knocking noise and oil light is flashing!!!

Hi all,

Been a member for a while now and this is my first post…..wooooo!

It's not good news though……please could somebody help?

I've just carried out an oil change on my Mk1 Golf Clipper 89 as I've done with all my cars and a couple of times with this one and never had a problems!!

Until now…….I did this service and turned the key, only to to discover, to my horror a knocking noise and oil light flashing…..what do i do?

I've changed the oil filter to a new one and i had a spare one and still the same problem……I am using the correct filter as it was the same type originally on the car which was running sweet before this :(HELP ME PLEASE…….GOT TO FIX THE CAR BEFORE WORK ON MONDAY!!!

Hi, are you sure it wasn't knocking before?

The knocking could be a tapet as I've had this before.
But sounds like it's got low oil pressure, how long did you leave it to drain? Maybe the oil pressure relief  valve is stuck?

Sure you've got enough oil in it?!

And how long did you run the engine for?

Hi MaxVW,

Thanks for the reply.

The car was running absolutely fine before. I left it draining for about 5 mins….is that ok?

I did run the engine for about 5-10mins…..long enough to warm up and I use this car every day so it can't be due to lack of use.

How do i increase the oil pressure and how do i unstick the relief valve if thats possible?

I'd check your oil pressure before you do anything, either with a gauge, which is ideal, take the oil pressure switch out and see if any squirts out, or take the cam cover off/Oil cap off, which could get messy!

It seems very strange to me for it go suddenly go during an oil change.

It's incorporated in the oil pump on these engines, which is accessable with the sump off.

Ok thanks.

I'll try and check the oil pressure tomorrow…..not sure how easy it is to do that, but i'll give it a whirl!

Best off buying a gauge from halfords or something.
The oil pressure switch is in the head :)

Just had a thought, your local motor factor might be a better place for a mechanical gauge.
