has anyone come across any guides on how to replace the rear speakers on an '88 cabby GTI?

Hi…if you don't want to pull the interior card off to access the rears then just run cables to the boot. Add a sub…and set too some ply and make a stealth parcel shelf add some nice hidden speakers.

Then when get really bored and make it show standard..

Remove the cover over the crank handle. Usually pries off, and swings out of the way Some have a black plastic replacement handle that comes off from the middle.
Remove the #2 Phillips screw in the center
(91.5 and above have a handle exteender that may come off so watch it) it allows the handle to miss the external grille cover.

Remove the rocker/carpet cover.
Remove the Weatherstrip on the "b"pillar that covers the front of the card..
Remove the over lap of the rear card cover onto the "B" Pillar.
Remove the Center Pin on the shoulder belt restraint cover and unwind it from the Belt.
Using a Panel Popper release the fingers from the frame on the Top of the panel.

Pull out and up to release the bottom of the card from the fingers..
