How to get more speed out of the big block carb engines?

With a bunch of other guys we have a Top Gear like challenge: you need to buy a car for less than 1000€, it must have a carb, and whatever you buy for it the total cost of car + mods must be bellow 1250€. "Security" parts like brake pads, lights and tires are excluded from those limits. We have two regularity rally (3000km, last one in the spanish desert so you add commuting) and a track day.

That's for the context, MK1's with big blocks fit the deal and it's a car I really like (I'm really into cars from the period, my daily drive is a e30 325i).

Before settling on that model, I'd like to know if there are "easy" mods that help gain more power (bigger carb, more carbs, cylinderhead swap, spaghetti manifold, …) or speed (shorter final ratio, LSD,…)



Any insight?
