ok so G Werks do a standard rebuild for ?370   standard charger should be rebuilt every 40k (which isn't too bad)

Once you've got a chassis that can handle the power then you can worry about how many ponies your pushing out and if your transmission can lay it down.

And that is the key…with 200+ bhp IMO you are well above what the standard A1 chassis can take without durability problems like chassis cracking, etc. Great you may have over 200 bhp, but unless you strengthen the chassis you may only have it for a few runs up the 1/4 mile.

As soon as you start putting more than 200bhp through the front wheels of any motor it all starts getting interesting or should that be sketchy…? :?

What's the most powerful FWD car available on the uk market? :dontknow:
I'm guessing the Alfa 147 GTA that has nearly 250bhp.  8O

I think more than 200bhp in a mk1 would be hard to drive and frustrating.

I think the best feature about the 20v t engine is its smooth delivery of power. There is not a great deal of lag. The 20v T would be a perfect conversion even in standard form, smooth, reliable power. 8)

The mk5 gti's engine has supercharger characteristics. I'ld love to drop a mk5 gti lump into a mk1 when they start appearing in salvage yards I may consider it, if time and money are at hand. :P

What can you get out of them with a chip? :dontknow:

Heres a thought?..Maybe if you had a laptop and relevant software you could remap it to your ideal scenario?.. or have a laptop constantly plummed to your dash and you could change mapping on the go. Several mapping settings that you just flick through depending on your driving mood. 8)  8)  8)  8)  8)  8)

I don?t know if that would be possible, definitely worth investigating. Imagine that! Who needs skyline when you could have your very own knight-rider style mk1! 8)

Well I can dream.

Until then I'm sticking with my2.0 8v project 8) Cheap and chearful :D

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

New Saab 9-5 Aero has 260hp    My old one went like stink!

I have to agree with Phil though, the 1.8T lump does not suit the Mk1's character. Its like putting Mk4 bumpers on your Mk1!

:D
There is nothing 'smooth' about a KO4(210/225bhp) charger, it doesn't kick in till about 2250rpm and then there's a massive dollop of power. A G60 would be smother than a 1.8T.

I'm having my 2.0 8v rolling roaded at the end of the month, i'll let you know how i get on, Kins. I spent about 1500 quid on my 2.0 conversion and i'm hoping it will produce something like 160bhp give or take.

From what Ive heard, a K04 turbo engine causes a lot os stress to the Mk1 shell due to the torque, thats where the G60 is better suited due to its progressive delivery (and its based on the old lump - keep it old school). Why do people say the mk4 turbo engine is reliable as well? I have heard many a time of problems with them off established tuners. A G60 is a much cheaper install, also partly due to the gearbox options you have & can easily yield 220 bhp - very quick in a light car - just keep the charger serviced properly. Having owned two K04 engined cars I thought the engines were very characterless. Horses for courses I guess.

Fiat/Lancia Twin cam - all the way!!  Come on people - you can pick them up in a complete running Thema Turbo 16v for ?200 and they are the same as the Delta Integrale engines - remap, cam change and there is 300bhp - start doing more work and the sky is litterally the limit.

It'll be what I'll be sticking in my Mk1 if I get this Mk1 Polo 'coz my twin carbed 1.3 will end up in there.  Anyone lend me ?500 till the end of the month?

Just my two pence, but has anyone thought about using the TDI engine from a Mk4!  This is a route i would definitely consider if I had any money.

Is that the Thema Turbo unit from the Ferrari? - would sound awesome.  8)

Heavy lump and my god that torque would shred a mk1.

I'ld still go for 20V t.

Anyone seen the new Golf+ mag inside is a new engine
TSI 1.4 turbo and supercharged producing 167bhp  177torque from 1750rpms.
Had this been around earlier think i might have gone down that route so much potential.
Ive done 11000k since engine swap and had no probs at all just awsomely quick useable and reliable power on tap without having to work it. :D

lol!

@ anton, i've seen a PD engine in a MK1 Caddy. One of the boys off E1K and PVW has put a modified 150 PD in his MK2, it has 200bhp and 300lbs ft torque - nice eh? 8)

ive got to go completely go against the grain here people, ive had a g40 in my mk1 for a year now and its rev happy and scares alot of people. with the eaton super charger kit now available 200bhp is easily attainable. the cost of the conversion is not more than an upgrade on the charger and with the eaton the service times are less and more boost!

If i had deep pockets (which i don`t)  :(
I`d opt  for the 20 valver each time. It`s newer, less miles, or thrashed and doesn`t need rebuilding or tinkering with every 5 mins… unlike the G60!
Don`t get me wrong i love superchargers, but i`ve spent enough hours under car bonnets on cold january mornings; so the idea of turn key 150-225bhp power seems the logical way to go.
 Has anyone out there got a TT powered mk1 then? I reckon not many as it`s about a ?4k - ?5k conversion!  8O   8O

Would like to here any opinions of the lucky gits who have  :P

Hey MrV….

Hope you were wearing your brown pants that day!
It must have been a real struggle trying to put all that power down on the road, and i bet the torque steer was ferocious!

Any m-peg style footage you could share with us all
