Carb or injection - again!

I know this topic has been covered a lot, but there were a couple of questions I'd like to ask. I'm currently running a 1.6 with a 2e2 carb and considering converting it to injection.

Is injection more economic than carb? I heard, especially when cruising, injection is superior as it can adjust the fuel accordingly
Would injection give better performance?
Has anyone done this before and could someone put me in the direction of other threads discussing this?

Once again cheers for the help

The problem is, you have a low compression and mild cam in your 1.6. The fuel injection off a 1.8GTI would be for high compression and a better cam. Same story for 1.6GTI. Its mechanical - so you can't adjust fuelling by chipping or flashing the ECU, because there isn't one. Yes, you can adjust the base fuelling, but the AFR vs RPM will always be the same relationship, due to its mechanical operation.

You could possibly adapt some kind of EFI, but it would be a LOT of hassle for little gain.

My best advice is to put up with it as-is, or sell it and buy a GTI cabby, or do a "big" engine conversion rather than messing around with bits & bobs on it.

Once again paul_c, you give me the wake up call I need!

For now then I'll get my 2e2 set up better and I'll continue to collect parts for the 'big change' to come……

Can the GTI mechanical injection system be fitted to the carb 1.8 EX engine? Got a  very healthy low mileage EX and it'd be a shame to swap it out for an unknown 2nd hand GTI.

I reckon you would at least need the gti cyl head, as it has the holes for the injectors.

if your 2e2 is healthy its actually very economical, my old 1.6 mk2 was always excellent on fuel and non of the injection engines I've used since in my mk2 gti have been able to match it!

however if you're serious about injection the digifant ecu actually handles the 1.6 engine fine as a mate of mine found out many years ago. not so sure on the kjet lump I dont know of anyone who has tried.

either way though as above you'll need to swap the head for a GTI one so you got to ask is it really worth messing about with the 1.6 lump instead of just popping a complete 1.8 gti engine in?
