Hi Peter, do you have a photo of the tower your selling. I think it has just got to be from a 1998 golf gti, so that it has the same shifter mechanism as the TT, aswell as a smooth shaft where it locates

Have you used the 02j gear knob peter? Wouldnt mind having the original mk1 knob, but thats threaded isnt it so would have to find a way of fitting it

I used jbweld to fit a golf ball on my shifter. Just plaster the top of the shaft and hold it down 15mins and leave it 48hrs not come of yet

Encountered another problem! This new smoothed shaft still wont fit, the shaft is still too big for the locator by 1mm diameter. Any ideas??

Nothing is ever simple is it mate  :P

Its not mate no. What Ive got to do is change the shaft locator from the the bottom of the gearbox. One to suit and fit the larger shaft tower.

did you sort your problem out m8? the tower i had for sale fitted staight into a lads 02a np. i have found that a mk4 golf gti tower fits into a 02a gearbox for deffo

Yes mate, sorted it. Ended up having to replace the bottom locator from underneath the gearbox, so that the shaft and locator matched up. All working fine now, the shift feels really good aswell, alot shorter and smoother than the standard 02a set-up

Hey Peter,
I know this was forever ago but do you still have the 02J tower by any chance?

My gearbox is an 02A DPA code, but I have a shifter from an '04 Seat Ibiza which I'm hoping will match to the 02J tower.

OK cheers for the reply. If you know of an available 02J tower please let me know - you seem to be the man in the know on these.

Could I ask what shifter you used and what bracket for attaching the cables to the gearbox? The 3-holed bracket on my cables doesn't line up with the holes on the 02A 'box

Cheers

Cheers Peter. Much appreciated.
I just started a new thread in the running gear section but you've probably answered my question and I'd rather have the 02J tower in before installing everything in the car and filling the 'box with oil.
I think my Ibiza shifter should be the same as your Polo one. If not I'll know what to get instead

Yes it be same . Best to upgrade the bow catch ends on the cables to later style for better shifting. Also you can fit the Audi Tt short shift cost about 32 quid and gears is so smooth and the throw is reduced by 30%

I like the sound of that. Please let me know if your mate has the tower and brackets
