Why do you own a Mk1 Golf?

i got mine for my 17th birthday! i always wanted a beetle as a kid growing up but then my dad and my cousin introduced me to MK1 GTI's and that was it!! i got a 1.3 CL for my birthday and i cant ever imagine being without her, even when im having to pour money into her like its going out of fashion i still wont buy a newer car, i love the raw driving experience you get from her and the old wrinkly men who stop me in car parks and are like "oh i used ot have one of these when they were new, its lovely to see younger generations keeping them going!" bless em. I just love my mk1s, iv got a cab and my other half has a GTI - so we havent really got space for anything else (well a corrado and and astra too)

its the real 70's/80's driving appeal, the comfy seats, the wallowy suspension and the PATHETIC horn that keep me entertained and driving my mk1! they are easy to work on and actually very nippy for a 1.3 too!
shame they are so thirsty tho :(

Please don't call me fella- its deeply insulting to one whom is no such thing! ;)

I think mk1's fit into quiet a special catagory one where people can drive them everyday and have them as a show car BUT unlike any other car you never see someone driving a mk1 golf because they 'just wanted a car' if that makes any sence if you see someone in a mk1 golf you know you will get a flash of the lights or a wave. The mk2 for example when you see people in a mk2 they could be an old man or women who just needed a cheap car to get around you never get that with a mk1!!! thats why i like em and all the other mentioned reasons!!

Because they are faster than most people think (just because its old)
and they look fantastic

I think they are individual and hark back to a time not so long ago when it was about driving a car and not having all the luxuries with it….also they look the nuts!!

Just a joy to drive even with the shake rattle and roll!!!

I own mine as I wanted a retro car to use for track days, I used to have a mini but it wasnt fast enough with out serious money being spent on it…and spares were iffy/expensive… mk1 spares are plentyful and theres far better support from VW and forums etc etc. plus I needed something small-ish…as I only have limited room in the garage.

and finally, I am a child of the 80s so I wanted something that was a cult car from my youth  8)

Daily - 05 plate B6 A4 Avant S Line, with 19s for the summer.. wifes car - Rare Seat Exeo ST Sport 170 Tech
Weekend - MK2 20vt monster - Plus a mk1 caddy I am fixing for my bro

A work colleague had a 1.6 GTI when I started work in the late 80s. I was gobsmacked by what happened when the revs passed 4k… hooked ever since.

Cheers,

Drew.

There's something reassuring about a mk1 Golf for me. We had mk1's in the family so I've grown up with them (I 'inherited' the main family Mk1 which I learnt to drive in etc - my dad still has it.) They're simple to work on and reliable.
There are very few cars of a similar age that are as good looking! Not practical and affordable cars for the average person anyway!
Despite having sharp lines and a boxy shape, they still manage to blend in with modern traffic…so you don't feel like a prat!   But, of course they're still distinctive enough to catch people's eye. Perfect!

Once driven - forever smitten !!
Fact. Period.

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

Cause when I was a 14/15 year old kid in the mid 80s, I wanted to have a bay, a bug and a motorbike.  I used to spend my pocket money on Volksworld, not Smash Hits.

Then when I grew up and developed a little more taste, I realised that the keen lines of the 80s squarer look was the one to go for, none of this cutesy rounded stuff - so I got a T25 camper, a Mk1 and a motorbike

Because old VW's are retro-cool !  I used to have air-cooled, but the engines were …. and are …. a little too phut-phut-rattle !!

I have always had mk2s as I am a little young to remember the mk1s first time round, although my mum had one from new from 1979 to 1999. I still have my Oak Green mk2 8v as my daily commuter but have a mk1 engineering and a cabby for the summer, yet to drive it in the summer more than once tho! Sodding UK weather. Just amazed by the handling and out of the box performance makes the mk2 look fat and sluggish!

I used to have a Spitfire … years ago in my youth …. and my lanky mates didn't fit in at all !!!  All my current m8's accuse me of having hairdresser tendencies, my previous "toy" car was a mk1 MR2 T-bar.  I love a really 'gay' car !

The other halfs' toy car is a far more serious "toy"  Big.  Green.  V8.  Turbo.  Convertible.  Any guesses ?

still jamie fits in the mk1 just fine (or did till i fitted the tt seats lmao).
