if however you are a young lady and get out and act dumb you will get away with it!
if youve paid alot for wheels/tyres etc then it isnt worth the hassle.
i used to drive around with german style plates and was pulled over twice and managed to talk my way outta it but they are really cracking down.
i would just get stretched tyres so the tread isnt outside the arch and dont push your luck.
either that or flair the arches.

"so if you choose to go wider and get caught by whatever police force it happens to be then ya cant blame the cops can you? "
Well yea i could as tbh a mk1 is such a friendly car so id see one with the wheels poking out and just think it was a nice car, nice stance.
Why would they want to make me have points, maybe loose my license or have my car taken off the road just for something that looks good, i know the dangers but its a bit lame tbh.
What happens if i say i purchesd the car as it was, wasnt aware of a law that lame.
I wouldnt be rude and i definatly wouldnt have tracksuit bottoms on and nore would they be in my socks, more jeans by my ankles.
If we lived in a less petty country wed be able to do what we liked.
Also what would the police say about a bit of metal on hydrolics which hits the floor when im moving and makes loads of sparks, i reakon itd look sick, like my car was scraping on the floor.
Usually people do this by using air suspension but id rathers coilies cus ive got balls.

aslong as its not mego sticking out i wouldnt worry about it, and theyd get smackd by the wing mirror before they get wrapd up in the wheel
dont listen to people saying it looks crap or it looks good, if u like the look of it. do it, at the end of the day its ur car and other peoples opinions dont matter,
i always have the last laugh

Which they are not as standard and as its not the best a mk1 can look i may aswell change it so it looks the best it can. (Personal opinion)
And how can you compare speeding to where your wheels are placed, obviously having the wheels a foot out is stupid but why just a small amount just to make the car look as pristene as it can.
If i owned a car company, i wouldnt leave a massive gap between the wheel and the arch cause its not the best it can look. (this is only done to save cost)
Before
After
They can look nice without but its the look i like.
Sorry but i always feel the need to show some examples.

They didn't leave a massive gap, though. Its about 1-2" isn't it? It was left to ensure tyre-arch clearance at the worst-case scenario, where the suspension is fully pressed in and the steering is on full lock. GTIs are (and can be) lower because the suspension is stiffer and has less travel. Coilovers have even less travel. The stock car has more travel for comfort reasons, to appeal to the majority of motorists (its not over-soft anyway, is it?)
By the way, its tested (well, observed) at MoT time and any tyre-body contact is a failure.
I think the problem is sticking wider wheels on and lowering too much. You can do one or the other, when you try both, you get contact. Obviously if the wheels stay within the arches you can lower the car further.

And im guessing you agree about the wheel placement then?
Thats fine but i was working out whether there was an offence and now i know there is for definate i think its rubbish, its like standard English laws full on jokes.
I see landrovers all the time with insanly fat wheels buldging out their arches 3 feet high from the ground, that could be hectic as someone could fit under the wheel, you couldnt even put 3 fingers under mine.
Plus police leave them be, pull over the young kids in the Golfs just because their young, my mate got took off the road cus his mk3 was rubbing cus it was too low, even thats a joke.

So they just went for one thing also.
And if you have jsut wide, you want low.
And if youve got low and proper thin tracked mk1 itd look like its wearign a really baggy skirt.

What am I agreeing about wheel placement? They're approximately in the corners, you're arguing because you want them an inch or so further out, and I'm saying if they were they'd contact the bodywork on full-lock and full-suspension travel.
Landrovers with wheels/tyres which are sticking out are breaking the law too, as I see it - 2 wrongs doesn't make a right! And you couldn't really use it as a defence either….
Okay how would they have made it low and comfortable?

Plus about the owning a mk1 situation, i will do in less than like less than 2 weeks and its only due to funds and the fact that all the people in your time have messed all the mk1s that are in decent conditon up so ive now had to wait ages to find one.
Im at uni, with no job, ive not long writen off my mk2 so its quite hard for me to afford one, least im showing the respect and havnt gone out an bought a metty to taz about in.
Its ok for the people who are old enough to work a full time job which pays a decent amount of money.
And if i hadnt have asked this question i may have got my mk1, stuck fat wheel spacers on it and either got taken off the road/given points or fined so its better me asking as im guessing theres many people like me who like the mk1 for having nice arches etc so want to fill them instead of have it sitting looking odd because the wheels are 2" into the arch.

Put some money into researching diferent types of suspension etc
Or more money into better designs, you cant say its not possible as it obviously was, due to newer cars being smoother on the road etc
