What started your Mk1 love affair?

I bought a beetle to restore when i was 14. Spent 3 years and 6k of paper round & birthday/christmas money restoring it. I caught the bug then. Circumstances meant i had to sell the beetle.

Now i'm all grown up, i needed a grown ups car, my shiney old 1982 MK1 GTI fitted the bill just nicely. And i love it!!

 

I was a confirmed aircooled head due to my mate having a beetle resto shop. Trouble was i liked looking at them far more than i ever did driving them. Still do. Another mate got a cheap beige 5 door MK1 and that was it! I had to have one!! Bought a very shabby GTI a few weeks later and have absolutely adored them ever since. Ive strayed many times but i always come back to my first love  :wink:

when i was growing up in the 80's a guy had a mint y-reg mk1 gti re-sprayed in cadburys purple fell in love with this car, watched him change and modify it over the years and thats that really hooked from the first day i saw one, bought mine and my love for mk1's just got a lot stronger, got a mk5 as my family car but my mk1 is my no1 there was also a black 1 on my est still remember the reg stf80y everyone called him stiff boy wonder if its still going? :dontknow:

for me i got the vw bug thro owning mkII golf, i sold it after a 2yrs and within a few wks realised how much i missed it so immediately bought another, part x'd that one for another and cash, then sold that and bought a lmt edition jetta gti mkII,  had to sell that due to misses crashing her car and needed something she felt happy driving took the wheels off that and kept them in the barn hoping one day i would get another and hear i am5yrs later and finally got myself another golf but this time i think a secret underlying desire for a mk1 found its way out and took over, i'v always liked the mk1's and i remember when i bought my 1st car a nova at the auctions i had 1500 to spend and at the auctions there was a clipper there i did place a bit but it went for silly money and that was a dream bid and it soon went well over my budget of 1500 and it was the 1st time i looked at a golf and thought i want one i guess from that day i had a bug that i would never loose    :wink:
