no not a pro sprayer, this will be my first paint job. hence the rather random choice of paint, its cheap and requires no spraying skill! it will do for my daily
running total is ?350 for car, paint and interior! 8)

looking forward to seeing someone try this. when do you plan to start?keying the old paint or are you going to bare metal? i have just finished using a electric painting gun(normally for garden fences), celly paint, and lots of 1500 wet and dry to paint my mk1 capri. very pleased with the results! :D

also the mk2 escort bumpers COULD be genius! can you get a pic of them offered up to the car?

i'm not bare metaling the shell just filling and dents and scratches(not many) i'll only bare metal it where theres rust but so far only the rear arches have one old bodged repair and a tiny bit of surface rust. I've started to prep the body which should be almost finished tonight, the paint is mixed and i should have done a couple of coats by tomorrow evening.  :D  hopefully should be finished by sometime next week!

I haven't bought the bumpers yet but i am very aware they could look awful but as i said i think its worth it for ?10-20 i can always sell them on ebay for that much if it looks pants.

How are you keying your old paint?
if the old paints not to bad and body is straight i find that fine/medium scotch pads and prep wipes(halfords) for degreasing the quickest and easiest way.

Would be good to see some photo's as you go.

PS. love the colour choice!

keying it with scotch pads and 200 grit sandpaper. got plenty of slow degreaser as i have a caddy which is currently half way through the bodywork(this is a quick project the caddy is gonna be special! hopefully!)
i'll get some photos up tonight……got all of next week off work so shold be looking pretty good by then 8)

heres some pics of the front, it looks a lot better than it is at the moment this is after only one coat(5-7more to go) and i did it outside just as it was getting cool so theres about twenty flies stuck in the paint, which i can sand out but its a bit frustrating watching them fly and get stuck into the lovely paint……which seems brilliant it goes on lumpy and rough like if you were rollering a wall but it smooths out beutifully!

i should have more progress and better pics after the weekend 8)

:D looks like a good start. how did you find the colours?  does the paint inside match the colour on the lid? did you have to mix much yellow in?

millions of years evolution - but still those flies never learn! :x

paint inside matched lid perfectly, no idea how much but i ended up buying red(brewers have a limited selection) and mixing a little of that in as well as it was a little bright. i should have really measured how much i used but i would never be able to get the same colour again and i've got 2.5ltrs and its meant to only take 1-2 ltrs to do a whole car so i should have plenty left for touch ups. i used about 1/3 of a plastic cup mixed with white spirit about 20% to do that.

If you go www.combicolor.co.uk and give them a call they will send you a RAL chart with true paint colours on it or theres a downloadable one but its not very accurate!

One cheep way to stop flies gettin in the paint is get down to wilkinsons and but a gazebo with sides
They are hexaganoal and come with like net curtain material on the sides
I dont think one is big enough to get a whole car in but you could put it up around the parts you are painting and hey presto a makeshift paint booth!!

These are after only 1 coat i think its fine to do 2 coats in a day but i'm gonna let the first few coats get really hard……

you can see straight through the paint at the moment but i do have another 5+ coats to do so im quite happy with it, it is really shiny though!

Whats your plan? one coat a day? how long does it take to do a coat?

I see you decided not to smooth the rear doors, do you intend to change the wheels?

Post

yeah decided to leave the rear doors, no point getting rid of the best point about a 5 door……can always do it at a later date! a coat takes about half an hour not sure how long the wetsandings going to take i think around 1 or 2 hours but i should only have to do this 3 times. i'll do another coat this evening then i've got the rest of the week off so i'll probably do two a day after that one in the morning and one in the evening.
yes definatly going to get some tasty alloys and a sensible drop. but both will have to wait until i have the money. still got to sort out the engine and fix in the seats. :banghead:

Any progress? photos? what type of alloys you thinking of?

Post

this is after the third coat this morning………the camera doesn't show the little imperfections but its coming along. no idea what alloys i'm gonna go for i would like any deep dish wheels, but i don't have much money to spend on them at the moment, anyone got any cheap alloys for sale?
