Petition for the mk1 to be tax exempt

Hi,

Does anyone know if the mk1 has ever been put forward to be classed as a classic car and therefore become tax exempt?  It would help enthusiasts save ?150+ a year which could be spent on their vehicle… new clutch etc.

Just interested if anything has ever been done and what the process is of putting a petition forward to the government?  May be something to take to the AGM?

Your thoughts and suggestions are welcome…

Would show my support, not sure if anything has been done so far.

Don't think the government would approve in these hard times but can always give it a shot.

There is already one relating to a rolling 25years.  It has 695 signatures so far.  Not sure if that one is better to hop on to?  That's basically what we want to achieve and has a mass of votes already?

Here is the link… please sign if you haven't already:-

I'm doing it at lunch time.

Thanks for the prompt replies as always

Sorry but you are wasting your time, the tory party introduced the rolling 25 year tax excempt thingy, the labour party scrapped it the minute they came to power leaving it fixed at pre 1973. even with another party in power with all this GREEN nonsence there is no chance.

I think something could be done, maybe a compromise, 30 year old cars tax exempt or something like that, as that means there is more chance the cars will only be used on weekends and not on a daily basis.

Think some euro countries have a rolling 30 year date. We seem to be harmonising lots with Europe so perhaps it will happen some day. On the down side think they also have restrictions on use and milages etc

Don't start the green debate again, its prob better for the planet to keeping an old cars going than the impact of producing millions of new ones…….

Yes restrictions on use could be a problem if we dont pay road tax and while that wouldnt be a problem with my 45 year old hobby car it would cause problems with my golf as always meant to be my daily.

Lets hope we get free road tax! My mk1 doesnt cover many miles anymore, I hate spending ?180 a year for it to sit in the shed!

How would everyone feel if they allowed free road tax, with the restriction that you can only go to-from official events? And if you wanted to do more than that, needed to pay full whack?

Wouldnt work for me, as the main point of having is nice weather and car comes out for the weekend. 8). Also any breaks in the uk, normally consider using, eg 1500mile week long break in scotland last year.

Cover 6k last year that way, prob cover 3-4k this year. But havent been spotted and put on 'was it you' yet… :banghead: big reminder

Id guess most of us would do more than just official events, so very few would qualify. But I sppose could be a starting point.

The government want the tax money too much…now that loads of new cars are qualifying for zero tax (or even ?35 a year), they've got to make money somewhere. A new car with ?0-35 road tax at the moment is unlikely to be that good a price for the life of the car anyway…if more and more people get new cars that cost sod all to tax…and scrap their bangers, there'll be hardly any money coming in at all soon! Just how I see it.  :dontknow:  I can't really complain about paying top wack for tax, I drive mine every day. If it did 20mpg, cost the earth to service and repair, didn't look good, and drove like a sack of poo I'd have got rid of it by now, so it makes up for it by saving me money in other ways.

i found this on the e-petition site, a long way to go but with the amount of people from all forums and shows it might make the 100k point one day..

Restore a rolling 30 year exemption

I doubt this would ever happen.

If they made the mk1 tax exempt then they would have to do the same for every car of the same age which means they would loose a lot of money which lets be honest they aint going to do.

Another reason why I dont think they would is that so many of them are used every day.

This will never work. Its not about whether you think your mk1 is a classic.

Cars built before 1 January 1973 are eligible for 'historic vehicle class' and therefore exempt for paying road tax in the UK.

But it stopped being a rolling date in 73.

Couldn't find the one with 695 signatures but did locate one with 297. It now has 298 and I think everyone should show less apathy and sign it. In this throw away age in which we live I should not imagine there will be vast numbers of people keeping cars this long so it's left to us enthusiast's to pursue it and hopefully save a few quid. If any government are going to take notice I think the tories will. Get it signed !

I wont be signing, its not apathy its realisation that it just wont happen, as hanging wont be reintroduced however many people sign anything.

One thing is certain, unless people shout up then nothing will ever change !
