Paint Job Cost?

Any ideas how much an paint job can cost roughly for my MK1 GX '83, not to much prep to do and original colour again. I know theres alot of variables in a paint job quote but i was just wondering if anyone can give me a ball park figure? Cheers

Paint jobs

One thing I can tell you is that where you live is a major factor! I've ran Audi/Vw paint shops in both Milton Keynes and Norfolk, the quality of the end result is guaranteed to be the same(by being to Audi/Vw standards). The cost of private repairs in Norfolk was 60-75% of the Milton Keynes price's.
Where ever you live 20 minutes phoning 5-10 Yellow Page local body shops will give some idea of the cost. The MK1 G60 Cabriolet in my drive set the owner back £3,000 (and that was to the original Vw flat colour, not some exotic pearl or metallic!). Good luck.

2 tintops.
3 cabbies, 1 with G60 power, just for fun.
Volvo T5, just for fun.
3.1Ltr V6 Dutton Leggera, just for fun.
Renault 5 GT Turbo, just a money pit!
Several boring cars, just no fun!

I don't think you'll get an accurate quote by phoning up body shops (they will probably be able to give a ballpark figure though), pretty much everyone will want to see the car and assess the job. Most good painters are also very wary of others' preparation and will want to do that bit themselves, I'd imagine.

The thing is, with an old car there will inevitibly be dents, poor paintwork and rust to deal with, which affect the job a lot.

The cheapest start at around £1000 and the sky's the limit. But that's really just a rough guide.

As sais really, best thing to do is go visit some local bodyshops for quotes.

Without them seeing the car there pricing thin air.

I did all the prep work myself showing the bodyshop everytime picking up my flaws and correcting it so it was 100% ready to paint back to the orginal colour all in all i got a good deal at £500, but as said before visit bodyshops and get a real price in writing, or do what i did, alot of work but as i was on a serious budget it was worth it and i know how much filler there is in my car and where it is, and its wasn't alot which i'm proud of.

Good luck

Cheers, Dave.

Thats a toughie.  I have a mate with a bodyshop and a good one at that. He wants even from me (known him 30 years) £1200 for a proper respray and all the prep.

Never go too cheap when it comes to things like this and if you can try and use someone who comes recommended then all the better.

When it comes to paint you get what you pay for.

Also if a bodyshop charges a lot that doesnt guarantee a top job.

If its a big shop with quite a few people working there then there overheads will be high, therefore they have to charge more.

If there a smaller shop with only a couple of people there then there overheads will be less.

Price doesnt always equal quality.

Go see what sort of work there producing.

Very true. Cant beat actually seeing a bodyshops work or having them recommended.

And mostly, strip the car yourself this alone will save you alot of pennies.

If you strip prep and polish the car your self it shouldn't cost that much as these are the most labour intensive parts of a re spray.

Just dropped mine off to the bodyshop today.

Stripped and glass out for them.

£1300 for a full monty including door shuts, inside bonnet, inside boot and some metal work to one of the wings. Going to flat and polish it to get rid of any orange peel also.

I've told them I want it mint due to advertising for him on the forum. That seemed to help!

Mates rates, but I was quoted about the same from another place.

Mk1 Gti Cabby project on the go! Detailed engine, roof off, leather interior, 16's, painted, now getting put back together!

Hi mate, was this in the Midlands? Do you know if the company is still going and if so would you be able to give me the contact details. After a paint job, done all the prep and on a tight budget. Thanks, Liam.

Paint Job Cost?

I was quoted 2k last week for a windows out exterior job. I have A LOT of rust blisters on mine and will have 2 new rear arches plus maybe replace the sills at the same time. Keeping it black but may add a touch of dark green and a hint of pearl to make it shine a little different nothing much just really subtle. Anyway this is near Solihull.
