Market Value of MK1 GTi's.... let's find out...

Mony001 said

its good value (£9 to sell the car)

Its minimum £8 to LIST it. Most people on an auction listing are going to put on a reserve - another £8. Both non-refundable. Its the £35 (for sale price over £3.5k) selling fee that kills it (even if your buyer doesnt pay up). So I don't think it good value for money. Pistonheads is free for standard ad, classic car sites and this site are also free with no time limit. Plus greater chance your buyer will actually pay for it.

Never mind the sun roof, front wing decal and alarm key thingy drilled through the rear quarter… Its the huge clag of street fudge on the front tyre that is bothering me.. Anyone who leaves that on for photographs…. Well…. In my opinion.. Dirty tyres, dirty arches.. Dirty arches, dirty hands.. Dirty hands, dirty mind… AND I SURE AS HELL AIN'T GONNA BUY A CAR CAKED IN DOG POO OFF A GUY WITH DIRTY HANDS AND DIRTY MIND!!!

Cookoo!  :D

OMG you're right - dog do on the front left tyre tread! Shocking…. I think a discount to the winning bidder in order….

Really interesting about the Kent car… I bought this one from near Brighton - not Kent - but does sound spooky to be so similar. The car had been left in lock up garage for more than 10 years - and the fuel system had gone on it… hence the need for tank, pump etc. The sun roof is not factory fit - but is period for early '80s - and is a good fit and finish…. no leaks…. but I agree not perfect….

The key fob thing for alarm on rear panel is, again, period for early 80's - and not too bad…

Regards  Gary

Its defo the same car I viewed. I veiwed it in the garage it had been locked away in.

Good luck with the sale.

Very interesting… the car being the one you viewed. It wasn't Kent for sure - but just north of Brighton… It came up on ebay - I viewed and offered cash to withdraw from sale (which he did). The fuel problem was real - which needed £500 to fix (which he did - not me). I had to replace the fuel tank with a new fuel tank as some rust still found it way to the uptake tube in the tank.

You may also remember the odd discolouration of the tops of the front wings? I had these resprayed….

As you said, the car is a nice, honest, example. The fact that it was garaged for 10 years has helped keep the condition and reduce risk of corrosion. I too mentioned the sun roof. The chap was also saying same thing - that it was factory - I too agreed to disagree…

Small world…. G

Just out of interest where was it exactly?

That said thought there have been some extraordinary sales recently on the bay, case in point:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160559680861&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123#ht_500wt_1156

£450 for correct bumpers, however they are sunny climate chrome and already starting to flake, the buyer either knows he has to shotblast and re-chrome or powdercoat - or am I being silly?

Also saw some flag mirrors going for silly money as well.

My reasoning is the bay is good for things you don't necessarily have to see to buy because or the massive audience your attract, I have sold a car indirectly through ebay - you do get the attention, however not always of the genuine variety!

1980 Series 1 GTI (gone now .. what a mistake selling her!)
1979 Series 1 LD - the Mandarin Dragon … gone as well. oh dear.

It was actually in Hayward's Heath… about 10 miles north of Brighton. The car was in a lock up…. Chap just married and I think his wife was not too pleased at having GTi in the garage. He was a bit of a VW fan..

He had bought it from a neighbour - who had garaged it for the 10 years or so. You must have seen the car before he had all the fuel work carried out (which cost about £500 from memory). It drove perfect all the way back to Coventry. Then it developed the habit of cutting out…. (see my technical questions on the forum about a year ago) - which was diagnosed as rust in fuel tank - causing the pick up tube to block.

Solved this by buying and getting garage to fit a completely new tank. This solved the problem permenantly - which is why it goes so well now… a little flyer!

I paid what I thought was a fair price…

Woooooo!

Big up Haywards Heath!! What a great town…. And now its in Coventry where my brother is at university.

Where abouts in Haywards Heath was it if you can remember?

Hayward Heath rings a bell now. I was working down in Kent at the time so popped across to have a look.

Same guy.

Yep - same guy… same car…

At least you've seen the car and hopefully you can see 've tried to descibed the car honestly in the advert.

I think the comment is also right about not seeing many on the road now. I can't remember seeing another one for a long time. I've been using the Golf to drive from Coventry to High Wycombe once a week - and it got better and better with use. It was like the car needed use to free everything up… its now flying… very punchy performance…

Cheers - the car is on ebay if you wanted another punt at it! LOLs….

I think you're right - plumber… yes…

Perhaps I got lucky with the price - not sure - I paid what I thought was a fair price for it - given that he'd spent £500 on getting the fuel system working… I'm not looking to profit too much from the car - just want it to go to an enthusiast and return what I've put into the car…. G

thank for the comment… appreciated. It really is a nice example… as I've just said on ebay - I'm going to take more photo's on Sat morning and post the link to Photobucket. I keep stressing - I really hope it goes to an enthusiast (and member of this club) - who can keep it garaged, cared for and driven/enjoyed… as well as showing.

While its not in the pampered league of pristine/showroom/concours contestant - it is seriously genuine….

Cheers Gary
