Market Value of MK1 GTi's.... let's find out...

I've just listed my GTi on ebay… (see third party link in forum)… its a great and original, non-rusty, low miler…

Importantly, it is listed with starting at one pound - no reserve - and will go to the end of the auction. I have turned down offers and lots of requests for 'buy-it-now' price…

Why I mention this is because I don't think many original condition MK1's have been on ebay recently - and allowed to run to a conclusion… ie - so that the true market price can be established. My instinct is that values have been climbing steadily - but its hard to pin the rate of increase down at all.

From the large number of 'watchers' on ebay suggests a lot of interest in finding out what the car will go for.

I'm sad to see the car be sold - but needs must in the current climate. Any comments/thoughts would be appreciated - or if anyone would like to have a guess at the value it'll go for would be great. Cheers and thanks  Gary

Letting your car run to the end of the auction doesnt mean its going to fetch its true market value.

Good luck with the sale tho.

I agree about market value…. however, ebay is one of the most widely searched selling/buying tools - and I think must therefore be pretty good at getting close to market value (whatever that means).

Thanks for the guess at €3k…. I would think it'll go higher than this - but let's see…. might be less, might be more…

As I said before, I've been looking closely at all GTi ebay sales for last 6  months - and I've not seen anything like the one I have for sale. Interesting…..

Sunroof and alarm on rear quarter might put people off.
Also looks like a replacement RH wing (missing stripe)
Ebay won't get you the best price

Where would you recommend to sell a car, to achieve its best price?

Thanks Dudboy… agree about sun roof and alarm. Front wing original - was painted with bonnet because of odd discolouration - no rust… black stripe put back on by spray shop…

Not sure how best to get best price…? Do you have advice? Perhaps Coys? Or at trade show? I like ebay - gets lots of views and watchers… Cheers

I suspect it will go over £3000, but that dosnt mean the winning bidder will actually pay for it.

That's true… abfmk1….

For information, I sold my White 1983 MK1 Gti on ebay about 18 months ago - it sold for £2850… it was in good condition, but nothing like the condition of this red one…. I got paid last time from winning bidder… a fellow MK1 club member…

If I get let down, then sobeit… I'll keep the car as in no hurry (or desire) to sell….

Not sure how best to get best price…?

Classic car website and magazines and also through word of mouth within Mk1 enthusiast circles

1. With ebay there is only a limited time one can view the car before buying, so people cannot view unless close by. Therefore people have to assume some faults with the car and bid lower accordingly.
2. The best examples of any classic car (in which I include Mk1 GTi) rarely appear on ebay. Serious (more affluent) buyers search classic car press not ebay.

The above is my general opinion based on experience and of course there may be exceptions. I have sold a lot of cars - never once through ebay directly.

Good points you make for sure… I agree that you don't often see really good examples of classic cars on ebay - there's a lot of rubbish cars attempted to be shifted through ebay.

However, I have found that, with lots of patience, and a keen sense of judgement, you can pick up good cars on ebay. I bought the white MK1, a great 911 and a fantastic MR2 - as well as the current MK1 through ebay. You got to sift through the dross to find the little gems. If you ask the right questions and do the right digging - you can generally sort out the folk trying to sell a pup.

I really hope that my ebay profile, history, description and good quality photos and description go a long way to show that the car (my myself) are honestly represented. If so, then I think the car might fetch a reasonable price.

I also think quite a few MK1 members and prospective owners also keep an eye open for good examples. So far, there are over 140 watchers - in just one day since listing - which is a lot by any standard… so it does seem to reach lots of people.

Let's see what happens in the coming week - to see if ebay is good or not at maximising value… Cheers Gary

Hi

I am always browsing mk1s on ebay , it seems to me that Projects go for silly money & cars that are ready to just drive away take ages to sell , but this ebay listing is well worded with lots of picts & info , thats makes a big difference in my mind when selling a motor especially on ebay when peop have to be persuaded  to travel long distances to buy the car.

Ebay does not represent true value, it's basically a gamble. Depends on who's watching and who actually found your auction.

You'll have to put your hand in your pocket for best results. Best place is weekly inkies and specialist sites like this one and piston heads etc etc

Good luck

That is a really nice example - you will get a decent price but have to agree with others on here - put it on Pistonheads or something like that. A car in that condition that has not been "chavved" up is really, really rare. Having a car with no rust, of that age…….don't get me started!!

I like your door handle protectors - I've got them on mine and yours is the only other car I have seen with them!

GLWTS - I hope you get the price that the car deserves.

The major disadvantage with ebay is the end time is fixed. So people wait until the last second to bid which isn't going to necessarily be their highest bid. This doesn't make it a real auction.

IMO ebay should operate in the way that if someone places a bid in the last seconds it extends the end time for say another 5-10 minutes. This gives previous/new bidders the option to think about increasing their bid further and would make bidding at the last second pointless.

ebay is in favour of buyers - not sellers.

Did you buy the car from Kent BTW? I viewed a similar car a couple of years ago for sale down there. There can't be 2 with an alarm key stuck on the OS rear quarter panel :dontknow:

Dubboy is correct - the alarm and the after market roof put me off- just - oh and it wouldn't start because of a dodgy fuel pump relay so I couldn't even hear it running!

The seller insisted the roof was original. We agreed to disagree :|

However if it is the same car and having seen it in the flesh and if you're not too bothered about aftermarket roofs and a period alarm then this would be a really nice car to own.

Hi there… I'm liking the interest in the car and the discussion about ebay and best way to sell nice examples. As I've said before, I do like ebay - in that its good value (£9 to sell the car) and has a definitive end point. I agree it may not get 100% coverage of all folk interested in buying the car (its only on the auction for 9 days)… but it works for me (and I hope it does this time).

Really interesting about the Kent car… I bought this one from near Brighton - not Kent - but does sound spooky to be so similar. The car had been left in lock up garage for more than 10 years - and the fuel system had gone on it… hence the need for tank, pump etc. The sun roof is not factory fit - but is period for early '80s - and is a good fit and finish…. no leaks…. but I agree not perfect….

The key fob thing for alarm on rear panel is, again, period for early 80's - and not too bad…
