Janspeed Development

I have just started working @ Janspeed in Salisbury.

They are looking to re-release some of the older model exhausts sadly most of the jiggs are beyond repair.

So

They need some cars, at present there only making one style of exhaust for the ;
Mk1 tin top
Mk1 cabrio

I have suggested a 2"/ 21/2" outwardly rolled pipe as most popular, correct me if i am wrong.

And so ideally need 10-15 cars for each model.

Wow,thats like living in a sweetie shop!,do they still have their rolling road?

Speeding is like masturbation, everyone does it ,but it's not something you should record and put on the internet!!

Forgive me if im wrong or speaking out of turn but isn't 3" a bit, well of a boy racer size?  I would have thought a more subtle 2" or "2 1/2 at the very biggest would be all that is required.  I know you aren't going to make the full exhaust system 3" so why follow the modern trend with a big tail pipe on an old style car?

The sort of general horse power the average GTI  is putting out would never require anything big so please don't go down the road of the 18 year old SAXO crowd and end up comparing exhaust pipes!!   IMO :D

Good luck with the development anyway

3ins isnt really any bigger than the standard exhaust on the modern GTI. i think while 5years ago 3 inch back boxes were considered huge, theyre not that that big by todays standards.

boy racers only put big bore exhausts on cr@py old cars because they cant afford a proper car with a bit of grunt!

Thanks for the advice guys, i have changed from a 3" to a 2"/2 1/2".

I agree, but it isn't really a modern GTI is it.

I had Janspeed exhaust on a few car 15 years ago and loved them.  Can't wait to see the result just wish I was closer!!.

After spending a short time with Magnex staff they informed me that 2" to 2 1/2" is really all that is needed for up to about 300BHP, and most of the sizes bigger are all show.  You don't see 3 1/2" twin on a TVR Griffith (Magnex standard fitment I think) but you do on a little Saxo, How does that work??

But Im an old git anyway so im sure others wouldn't agree :D

I have a cabriolet GTi I could bring down, does it mean I get a exhaust for free? :)

Right guys a change of plan: Sorry…

Janspeed want to re introduce a new line of "retro fit" exahusts.

What I would like is your input on size and style and any other aspect.

So…

Tailpipes
I have 2 styles in mind.

1. As mentioned earlier 2 1/2" outwardly rolled
2. Original Look straight pipe as seen on original GTi's

Main System

2 styles

1. 2" with centre box
2. 2" straight through

Manifold

Is there a call for this

All systems will be stainless T304.

I reckon the outwardly rolled rear pipe with the centre pipe with box and another decent 4 branch manifold would'nt go a miss???  :dontknow:

Tailpipes

1.  Original Look straight cut pipe as seen on original GTi's (but slightly bigger just to show it is different, otherwise you could buy a Bosal or Walker and look the same).

Main System

2 styles

1. 2" with centre box - sounds good this would be the ideal system for me
2. 2" straight through - (how much louder do you think this would be? and will this type have any adverse performance characteristics for a standard engine)

Manifold

not sure

I wouldnt like to say how much louder this would be but obviously it will be louder, going to do some testing on my car with and without the box in the centre section.

I cant see any adverse effect on the performance.

I thought the centre box on these exhausts was just there to stop it resonating :dontknow:

I also think a 3 inch tail pipe was about the right size, thats what i have on mine and i dont think it looks that big at all

Sorry i didn't explain it very well,  what i meant was. Do you think it will change the characteristics of the engine i.e. low down torque.  I had a 205gti 8v years ago and had a system with the centre box removed and found it seemed to loose something down low in the rev range,   while it gained further up, but I didn't often drive at 5000 to 6800 revs.  So eventually I change it back to having a centre box.

It may have been all in my head though :D

Would the manifold be a 4-2-1 or a 4-1 version?

Post

The power band would be moved slightly up the rev range. so far the common concencus is a twin box system.

This is really what im asking your guys opinion for

i would suggest a 4-2-1 manifold

The 4-2-1 manifold would be my preferred option too, (when I eventually get  round to purchasing one).

Apparently they have a  more efficient flow of exhaust gases as opposed to the 4-1 version plus they look better!

no doubt the difficultly in manufacturing over the 4-1 will be reflected in the price.. :(

The 4-2-1  is what we are most probally going to produce if there is enough "demand", as we feel this would work better and suit the cars charactoristics.
