Odd or awful?… As far as I am concerned, another car that has been spoilt by modifications that are aesthetically unpleasant.. The gold wheels look terrible with the silver.. They could have worked with a blue car (not unlike the clio williams), however the roof has been done with a somewhat blinkered approach.. I mean lets face it.. With the roof down, anny pleasant drive through the countryside is going to rewarded with a face full of bee's!..

If Scoop dog poop dog and general practitioner Dre had a mk1 to bounce up and down at traffic lights on remote control hydraulic suspension, keeping it real and dropping some sick base lines, to represent the west coast bla bla bla.. This would be it..  :x

But.. Each to their own. Its his car and he can do what he wants to it and he prpbably enjoyed doing it etc etc etc (Statement to pre empt and dissarm the politically correct doo gooders out there)

Yeah, the silver cabby is heavily modified and 1 of 6 built by 'Artz' - more here 8)

Compare those two to the double chunder Reiger mk1 and I think we can say that the decisions regarding wheels and colour and even dare I say it grill modifications actually suit the car, regardless of whether or not modified cars are your thing..

I think the thing is that the modifications on most of the cars I've posted are timeless and won't date, whereas the Reiger cars are slap bang back in the 80's. That is the reason I like them, they were created when car design and styling was all about hard angles and squared off lines, much like those on the Mk1 Golf.

Later 90's car design and styling was about rounding off edges and smoothing out the lines (a good example being the Clipper kit - which works IMO) but I can't think of any other post 80's body kits that look good on Mk1's - they didn't have the right ethos and tried to update the look of the car too much.

I'm old enough to of lived through this period and although I don't think that Cabby is a very good example I do remember a few brilliant ones that worked well like a purple Pug 205 with the Reiger Kit, awesome! I guess you had to be there.

A friend of mine had a Peugeot 205 dimma in pearl white it was a 1988 F reg and it was about 1992 at the time, so very very new in that respect.. It really did turn heads, but after a while, I noticed more people shaking their heads as he drove past them and when he came to sell it a year or two on, nobody wanted to buy it.. At the time I was 20 years old and couldn't really understand why nobody wanted it.. On the whole, it looked in good condition, although the doors rubbed at the bottom (same as the golf reiger kits), it had full cream leather and massive chromed split rim alloys in the same style as the original 1.9 alloys.. Now I look back and realise fully why nobody wanted to buy it.. It was crap! Nobody wanted to be seen driving around in this car that everyone shook their head at.. It had gone from uber cool to ridiculous virtually overnight and I think the same of these reiger kits, also the skeet conversions on renault 5 turbo's.. I would take a standard car in place of any of those silly blown conversions any day of the week..

There was a guy who drove round my way back in the 90's in a Cadburys Purple 3 series BMW with a testarossa kit on it.

We all honestly thought it was the bomb, again tho, looking back it was utter rubbish.

Was only a 320i too.

The Reiger kit's an extreme choice but some people did it and it was good to still see a Mk1 in good condition sporting that kit at Stanford Hall. If some people don't like it fair enough, post up something you do like! :dontknow:

I think the point is that these cars were built to Show! They were built to adorn the cover of Max Power and other such magazines and were not daily drivers. Anyone building one would be mad to expect much for it in any sale but surely this is the same for any Show car even today. Very few people want to buy someones project especially if it's well known.

As to the Lime Green Skeet R5 Turbo I remember it well and lusted after it for months, it was amazing!

Artz? didn't they do that extra wide mk1 on a v8 porsche 928 chassis? i thought that was kinda cool.
dont like the roof chopped cabbys though.

i do like the reiger kit for some reason. i wouldn't own one though. as walt said, the wheels could use a polish but from the look of the pic. but to be fair, it looks like it was in the car park, not the show and shine. bbs mesh style wheels are a nightmare to keep on top of. and if that kit was fitted in the 80s, the wheels would have been put on at the same time so i understand if the owner has lost a bit of enthusiasm for perfection.
i couldn't have the wonky bonnet either. things like that make me twitch in the face.
nice to see something different though.

We've mentioned other cars and I am wondering if, in all honesty, if I could offer you the modified car over the original in the next few pics, whether or not anyone, hand on heart would take it?..

short answer, probably not.
unless it was a tickford turbo capri whch is a classic car now.

the dimma kitted 205 was inspired by the rear engined TI16 GPB rally car that had a squillion HP, i used to lust aftwer a white one when i was a teeneager as i thought this was a road going version of the rally car, which is the point, the 205 had a racing history so the kit worked

the moral of this thread IMHO is theres nothing you can do to improve on the red sportlines shown in this thread, which as you will notice have very few mods.

HELL NO!!!

Any tips on the suspension i gather if you lower the ride its gonna get harder?? has anyone fitted progressive springs to a late cabbie??

Hell yes to the orange cabby, give me the modded manta and 205, keep the 5 turbo with kit and give me the standard one. Capri's make me physically sick. Dem cars are sick bruv innit, ya get me!!  :D

I bet the standard Capri owner wished he had an intake like on the Pro Street Capri!

I'd have the standard R5, 205 and Manta, but I'd rather have the Pro street Capri as it'll be worth a fair few £ more than the standard one!
