Furthest you have gone in your Mk1?

I would suggest the following kit

Chemical metal
Loctite
a set of spanners in the common sizes 11, 13, 15, 17
tie wraps
metal speed tape or black bodge tape
electrical tape
a few meters of string
a flat and a philips screwdriver
a torch
some oil
water
some fuses

That should make a pretty comprehensive by the side of the road repairs and will get you out of any situation bar complete failure

North East England to the South of France, via Dover-Calais and back home through the Alps. Did it in my first GTI (VNL 525Y…. "Very Nice Lady") back in '88. As a naive 21yr old I don't recall taking any tools. Other than a brief spell where my spotlights failed the car never missed a beat.

420mile round trip halifax to banbury to hornsea then back to hx,plus 2 days running round in banbury.

Was last yr in the snow, car filled 2 roof with 2 kids, missus, lugage, xmas pressies & tool box.was the 1st time i had been more than 5mile from home since buying the car(she kept cutting out on me due to rotten filler neck which i replaced a week previous to setting off).
Took 6 fuel filters with & changed em when full of rust, used em all but she didnt let me down once just spluttered every now & again to let me no it was time 4a change.

No idea what i wud of done if id of broke down. God bless VW'S!! wudn't of attempted the journey in anything else.

I drove from Glasgow to Budapest and back.

Took a spare rotor arm, cos I had one.

ANd my mate pete, he's a scout.

Neither was required (for mechanical repairs - pete was good company)

Just have fun…their are garages all over europe, and the mark 1 is easy to work on, no problemo.

This is budapest campsite, and the aforementioned pete.
